After 20 years as a player at the top end of the game, Cesc Fàbregas made his first steps into coaching at Italian side Como. Having led youth and reserve teams for the Serie B side, the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea star made the step up to interim head coach in November 2023.

As a player, Fàbregas worked under some of the most prominent coaches in the game, including Arsène Wenger, Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, Vicente del Bosque and Antonio Conte.

In this exclusive Masterclass with The Coaches’ Voice, filmed in May 2023, he gives us an insight into how he wants his teams to build up from the back to create attacks. Using a 4-2-2-2 system, Fàbregas runs through the roles and responsibilities for players in each position, reveals the obsession for playing forwards that he inherited from Wenger, and explains why he sees the midfield as key to the game.

It’s a brilliant insight into the philosophy of an exciting young coach, who will now be putting his learning to the test on the grass. We hope you enjoy it.

After seeing what Xabi Alonso is doing at Leverkusen, i can see Cesc having a similar path.
Both were players that had great vision and were always 5 steps ahead

I'd love to see a video demonstrating the rotations and combinations used to play through a mid block rather than an aggressive press. I think most big teams face mid/low blocks a lot and I'd love to see what they're trying to implement in order to penetrate the last line.

I feel sorry for the next generation that will no longer be able to see artists like Fabregas, Ozil, etc, due to the game becoming systemised & robotic - blessed to have watched some special special players!

One of my favourite players when he was arsenal. Such an artist on the ball. Coming from a Liverpool fan

I like that Fabre isn't exactly like his former managers, or specifically a Barca style. It's unique in buildup formation, adapted to today's game and how important positional play is, while also managing a Serie B side where player development is different than spain, england, france etc.

Fabregas had such a strange career. His peak was at Arsenal where he only won one trophy, and even tho he played his part in the Spanish dominance, at club level even when he won he wasn’t the main guy like he was at Arsenal. Honestly the best vision I’ve seen in football, he could pick a pass from anywhere
