How to Combine Capacitors

preview_player
Показать описание
How to combine capacitors in parallel, in series, how to combine multiple run capacitors into one dual capacitor, and everything else related to that. If you find yourself in a situation where you don't have the right size capacitor, knowing the art of capacitor combination can help you out. I forgot to mention it in the video but many techs say that as long as a new dual capacitor is within 20% of the old capacitor's rating, you can use it for that unit.. So you could replace a 45/5 with a 50/5. I do that sometimes but I like to order the right size capacitor and come back later to swap them out. If possible, it's better to have the right size capacitor in there. Otherwise next time another tech will come out and might put in a 55/5 capacitor thinking that he is only 5 uF off..

This saved me today. After the big heat wave locally, all the suppliers were out of the capacitor I needed. I said, OK, tell me what you do have. Then I selected several available capacitors to make up the right combination for my AC unit.

This is a great tutorial and I share it with customers often when the correct capacitor isn't available and this scenario will work. So, thank you for putting this tutorial together. My only feedback is you're only mentioning the compressor with your L2 and L1 leads, etc. The compressor isn't feeding voltage to the capacitor, the definite purpose contactor is doing so... Hopefully, this minor detail isn't a head-scratcher for your audience.
Make it a great day and be safe out there!

Great vid sir!!! One Quick tip is that when combining capacitors in series (unequal denominations)your final combination number will always be lower than your lowest capacitors rating. Keep up the great work

Outstanding tutorial, I have a blown speaker capacitor without an exact replacement, but I have loads of other sizes. Great to hear it is possible to combine, mix and match to get the uF required. And the mathematical formula is a bonus to resolve the issue. God Bless.

Hey Jay, thanks for this video. I've been in service for only 2 years and this info will be very beneficial to me in the field.👍

I'm currently in HVAC school. Thanks for all the informative videos they're really helpful

The series method also doubles the available voltage, not that it would be needed, but it would last longer putting half the voltage on each cap.

I did not know any of this. Thanks Jay! Now we need a remedy for mosquitoe bites. They are bad here in TX!

It’s funny. I have had trouble with understanding series and parallel. Thank you for making it easy

Very nice technic if no other choice to replace capacitor thanks for sharing sir

Not only when you run them in series the uF goes down, but you increase the capable voltage. So if you had 2) 10uF 50v caps and you need a 5uF 100v then you would run the 2) 10uF 50v caps in series,

Great burn tip
The evaporation of the alcohol would help take the heat out and kill any infection before it can start. 👍👍

I can see doing this to get someone up in the field that has a need to be up fast. I would also like to see a revisit on company time and paid by the company to put the proper Cap in place. It is quite possible and actually probable that the parallel method would last longer but it is all dependent on wiring especially and other factors. Better to have one piece in place that might fail as apposed to two; one that may be perfectly good and one that may fail shortly after installation and we all know as a near DOA product. Limiting the chain to one takes allot out of the equation. BTW, thumbs up for the idea.

How do you know which wires are common coming out of the compressor and fan motor? Thanks for the info!.
