I’m surprised to hear that this is an urban fantasy series. Everyone I’ve heard talk about it, just call it “fantasy”, so I surmised a vaguely medievalish setting. This makes it more interesting, though I’ll probably never read them because they’re so long.

I'm not much of an urban fantasy fan, but this series is definitely on my list!

I personally was never into urban fantasy because of the harry potter esque stories; they were never my cup of tea. Recently though I've been more willing to give them another go. Green Bone is on my TBR and I'm hoping to get to it soon

Is it set in the real world[ like actual Urban Fantasy]? Or is it just set in a fantasy world with more modern tech/conveniences than typical/traditional fantasy[ and thus not technically Urban Fantasy at all but possibly gonna read vibing kinda more similarly to Urban Fantasy than it will vibe to like reading most other Fantasy books you typically think of when people say "Fantasy"]?? 🤔 😅
(Serious question, honestly—I don't actually remember if I've ever heard anyone actually say before😁)

Personally, I have always loved Urban Fantasy—I have always loved the marriage of imagining the fantasy things I love actually somehow being or coming into the real world that I actually live in!!! ^--^
(( ..like it's almost exclusively the ONLY way in which I will read books actually set in the real world, unless it's sci-fi instead; I am very much not a person who is all that into Contemporary fiction, generally—unless it's got some element of intrigue, or something particularly psychological, or crime, or sometimes just a good old fashioned action or adventure....and it's a movie or tv series, instead of a book, typically; which is kinda weird, now that I'm thinking about it, because I am also a huge supporter of the fact that Slice-Of-Life stuff should also exist. 🤭 Who knows why! ))
I don't personally think that it's really so much a case of Urban Fantasy being an unloved sub-genre, though, so much as I personally believe it is more a case of it being highly dependent upon your own personal niche—like, depending on what your own personal niche is, this is either going to be a genre that is FOR you, _or_ it is *not* going to be for you at all; kinda like Romance[ as the main plot] genre. 😁 🤣 🤣
(If that makes any sense^^ 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😹)

Like... there are Urban Fantasy fans. And then there are Fantasy fans. And they're kind of like separate clubs, that only rarely have some crossovers; like fans of Action movies, versus fans of Romance movies[, maybe?].

So it's all down to perspective, really! !!

(And, depending on which club exactly is[ or isn't] _Your_ own club, specifically: you're either going to get the impression that everyone loves it, *OR* that most people completely overlook &/or even dislike it. –Buuut, maybe that's just me? IDEKk!! 🤷‍♀️ 😂)

Urban Fantasy is kind of popcorn fantasy for me. Like it's never my favorite book or series, but it can be a perfect weekend read in between other heavier series'. Like The Iron Druid Chronicles just didn't live up to my memory of it on a more serious re-read, but when I first read it it was between reading Dune and Tigana and the levity and pulpy fun were fantastic palette cleansers.

I was never interested in urban fantasy until I read Green Bone, and now I'm honestly still not interested in exploring the genre as a whole, but three of my favourite fantasy books do happen to be urban fantasy.

I love urban fantasy when I don’t want really complex worldbuilding, unfortunately I have noticed that they have more Mary-Sue/self-insert type characters. Hopefully newer ones have stopped doing this, I only remember the ones from the 90s and early 2000s. Green Bone sounds like a good place to start with modern stories

Hey Cam,

I loved this series, but I personally don't look at it as UF as much as I do *Machiavellian Fantasy*. To me, at least, UF should have more than just magic in an urban setting. I think of it as just Fantasy - unlike say, The Dresden Files, Iron Druid Chronicles or Cal Leandros series.

BTW, love your videos, good sir! I wish I could hang with you for a few days and talk books, but moreover, SF/F art!

I mean... can anything even beat Dresden on Urban?
