Overlapping watercolour layers

Hi! It’s me Lore. Welcome to another weekly video!

In this video I’ll show you a fun experimental technique that you can apply to any painting, in only 5 steps!

1. Loose sketch of your subject
2. Light colour brush strokes
3. Medium colour brush strokes
4. Complementary colour brush strokes
5. Darker brush stokes and final details

Remember to not paint on the brightest or white areas of your subject, the white of your paper will do the trick!

We’ll apply repetitive watercolour brush stokes, going in the direction of your subject shape and movement, using only one round brush. So all the strokes will kind of look the same.

We’ll paint by overlapping those brush strokes from the lightest, then medium, complementary and finally darker colours with watercolour layers, according to the lighter and darker areas of your subject, you’ll create a colourful and interesting piece!

I’ll be painting a cat, but you can choose any other subject to paint, just use the same technique and steps!

For this tutorial, you’ll only need a watercolour paper, a pencil, a round brush and your watercolours! And if you want, you can pre mix your 4 different colours (light, medium, complementary and dark) before hand to make it easier for you, or just improvise as you go.

I hope you enjoy this fun technique and that after you see the video, you can apply this to other subjects and create your own paintings.

Thank you so much for watching! Let me know if you tried to do this exercise and how did it go!
