Jo-Anne Martin: I live a life less ordinary.
[music]
Jo-Anne: My name is Jo-Anne Martin. I currently work at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Victoria, and I am currently the Post Graduate Nursing Program Coordinator for that organisation.
The Royal Melbourne Hospital where I work has an affiliation with ACU. We run our postgraduate program through ACU; the program that I help facilitate. The opportunities that I’ve been afforded by doing my masters through ACU is that it’s given me the opportunity to actually put what I’ve learned into practice, not just at my usual occupation — my normal job — but also it’s me allowed me to do sessional teaching with ACU. And it’s also allowed me to use that in conjunction with my passion of Oncology Nursing.
I love the patients. I think that they teach me so much, not just about being a nurse but also about being a person. I think that they make me a better person, because I can see what they’re going through, and they just want to -- they’ve got a spirit to them that just wants to get up and go and survive, and so forth, and that can teach us, I think, so much. And if I can even help them remotely; spend five more minutes, a half-an-hour, a couple of months with their families to say what they need to say to them, then, I think I’ve done my job.
