The Last Poets—Blessed Are Those Who Struggle

"The Last Poets" is a legendary poetry collective/musical group that emerged in the late 1960s in Harlem, NY, and has gone through several incarnations over the past nearly 60 years. Look them up to get a better understanding of their place in U.S. political/cultural history.
This performance, which we were given permission to record, was the opening act for a reggae show at Kilimanjaro Club in NYC which we were scheduled to shoot on June 1, 1990. It features Sulaiman El-Hadi, who joined The Last Poets in the early 70s, at a time the group introduced jazz ("jazzoetry") into their sound.
Though this is not reggae, I'm sure you'll agree the lyrics are STRONG. It is easy to see/hear the influence that this group has had on later generations of hip-hop artists.
Sulaiman El-Hadi, may he rest in peace, passed away in 1995, but The Last Poets continue to perform, record, collaborate and wield their cultural and musical influence on the international stage.
