Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as 'Pathétique', is one of the very great symphonies in the history of music. The famous work was performed by the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marek Janowski in this concert at the Kulturpalast Dresden 2019.

(00:00) I. Adagio - Allegro non troppo
(17:32) II. Allegro con grazia
(24:54) III. allegro molto vivace
(33:49) IV. Finale: Adagio lamentoso

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) took just a few months to compose the Sixth Symphony and he conducted its premiere himself in St. Petersburg on October 28, 1893. Initially Tchaikovsky had called his Sixth 'A Programme Symphony', but after the premiere he unceremoniously gave it the epithet 'Pathetique' – and that is how it has gone down in history.

According to Tchaikovsky, the actual program is full of subjective emotions and is meant to remain a mystery. The 6th Symphony is characterized by a mixture of conventional symphonic structure and certain tragic features. Tragic, for example, is the key of B minor, which is considered somber, and the motif of the falling second, which runs through the entire work like a lament. The sweeping third movement, which seems like a triumphant finale, is surpassed by the fourth movement, which has always been interpreted as a requiem that Tchaikovsky wrote to himself in advance since the Russian composer died only a few days after the premiere of his Symphony No. 6, which received a restrained response.

The second performance of the Pathétique, on the other hand, was a great success, and to this day this frequently performed work is an audience favorite. Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony owes its fame not least to the yearning, melancholy second theme from the first movement (04:32).

Listening to this Symphony full blast was a refuge growing up... Now close to 70 it sounds like the comforting sounds of an old friend saying "you did ok, you survived..."
Thank you for posting.

In these times of hatred and lack of empathy, listening to Tchaikovsky is like sipping a glass of water in an arid desert. Honorable mention to the exquisite conduction of the master Marek Janowski. God bless them!

From my point of view, Tchaikovsky's music speaks more than other classical music with a deep soul of being. A lot of people are wrong when they say it's aristocratic music; on the contrary, it is meta-human music of the connection of multiple and disparate beings and existences.

Thank you to You tube for allowing us to enjoy so many marvelous performances. It’s almost like being at the ballet or concert. Many of us don’t have access to live performances.

The music instructs humanity on the depths that sheer sadness can reach and weeps and weeps. Then so do I.

On his way out the door Tchaikovsky left us a magnificent gift of supremely great music. I have listened to this masterpiece hundreds of times and it always blows me away. The melodies, the harmonies, the orchestration, the drama. This is as good as it gets.

The tragedy that was PIT he knew his end was coming when he composed this of how he was rejected and condemned by his colleagues no matter his unmatched genius. My heart is in shreds. Tchaikovsky has been my favorite since i was a child my father always played nutcracker suite and swan lake.

I was blessed to listen live to this marvelous symphony on October 1960. It was performed by Utah Symphony Orchestra. After all these years I still have goosebumps whenever I listen to it.

I can't stop crying. As an avid lover of classical music, I hate hearing people talk about crying. But tonight, I am filled with emotions and Tchaikovsky is filling all of them.

I remember a book published some years ago which was rather presumptuously entitled "A heartbreaking work of staggering genius". While that book did not deserve the title at all, this masterpiece by Tchaikovsky is perfectly described by that phrase. It is indeed a 'heartbreaking work of staggering genius' - in every possible way. Amazing, and life-changing when heard for the first time.

Sublime and inspiring performance of this Masterpiece. Bravo!! I love the entire Symphony but the first movement has always been the one that spoke to me the most. I remember hearing an 8-track recording my Dad had when I was a child and I was mesmerized. It still gives me chills.
