Hi guys, welcome to my Youtube channel. My name is Jorge and I live in the central andes of Peru. And today, I’ll show you my hometown Huancayo, as well as the most important places around here. We are going to talk about geography, history and some interesting and curious facts. So, let's go!
We arrived to the Parque de la Constitución. In english, it would be Contitution Park. This is the center of the city. And now I'll give some interesting facts.
Okay, first we need to know that Peru is divided in three natural regions: coast, sierra and jungle. Huancayo is located just here in the region of Junín. The altitude of the city is 3260 m above sea level, 305 kilometers to the eats from Lima, the capital of Peru. You arrive after crossing the Cordillera of the Andes.
The city population is 400 000 people. The principal economic activities are mining, agriculture and commerce. Huancayo is a compound name that comes from the word Huanca, that means stone, and the word Yuq which means The one who has. The city was found in the year 1572, as Pueblo de Indios or Indiginous town by Don Jerónimo Silva.
This is the old center of Huancayo, this old park is called Huamanmarca. Here, you can find the Regional Goverment of Junín and the Provincial Municipality of Huancayo. In this place, there used to be the oldest church of the city called Santísima Trinidad de Huamanmarca. It was destroyed in the XIX century by earthquakes. But, before the church was built in spanish times, there was an ancient rock that served as adoratory for the indiginous people. Now we just have this rock that you are seeing that was donated by the Franciscans in honor of the ancient church.
