The Quran makes no difference in the creation of man and woman and does not give any superiority of one over the other. The Quran uplifted the status of women and gave them rights that were considered revolutionary 1,400 years ago. Such rights that should have been enjoyed by Muslim women are sadly absent in most Muslim societies.
This lecture will shed a light on the advocacy work of a non-governmental organisation in Malaysia that is committed to the rights of women within the framework of Islam and universal human rights. As advocates of gender equality, SIS promote gender justice by criticizing the ill-treatment of women in the name of Islam. To uphold the spirit of equality and justice in the Quran Sisters in Islam believes that any reform towards a just and dignified society must take into account the historical context and lived realities and current experiences. Rather than utter imitating and conforming to the preceding interpretations of the Quran.
