Sultan Mahmud I was an Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1730 to 1754. He was born on August 2, 1696 in Edirne, Ottoman Empire and was the son of Mustafa II and the older half-brother of Osman III. He spent his childhood in Edirne. Upon his succession to the throne, he restored order after the Patrona Halil uprising in Constantinople. During his reign, the Ottoman Empire fought a successful war against Austria and Russia, which culminated in the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739.
