A Training Guide for FM

Football Manager 2020 has expanded upon an already complicated training system, so let me ease the burden. Learning team training, individual training, and mentoring is a large hurdle to clear -- with the fate of player development and matches themselves hanging in the balance. So, this video is a little longer, to make sure everything is covered to get you on your way.

I don’t think I have ever been asked more for a video. That being said, there are more videos to make on this subject. What we have here is an overview. Mentoring will be dissected further at a later date. Individual training will have a deep dive done on it as well to parse player traits, versatility and the like. I look forward to all this, but for me the hardest script to write was this one, boiling down the bare training tutorial. So, I hope you enjoy it!

As a scandinavian manager I demand that all my players embrace my viking spirit. If any of them think they're jaded I drop them to reserve team which have endurance+resistance scedualed 5 days a week. If they get injured they lack the heart to play football for me. Nobody reached the top by resting all day.

I have a suggestion: End of season squad evaluation to identify who stays, who goes and who gets brought in.

Also, one of the things to add after a match day is Goalkeeping training. Goalkeepers do not tire pout as much and can train to 100% on the next day, or even on double intensity if you set it on the rest tab.

This is a great video mate!!! Before seeing this I would leave the team training to my assistant, now having seen this I will be attempting it myself. There are a lot of aspects and methods to training which made it very daunting for the casual player. You have clarified so much in under 30 minutes!! Well done mate keep it coming as you are really contributing and helping me and probably lots of others enjoy FM so much more.👌👌👌👌👌

This is the video I needed, doing a save with Red Star Belgrade and have reached the round of 16 in the champions league where I've beaten Real Madrid 2-1 and now I'm waiting for the second leg.

I’ve always let my ass man handle training but I think I’ll give it a try myself for once. Thanks for the guide.

Hey Zealand, love your videos! As a fairly new player I'd really appreciate some help on creating a new tactic.
Thanks in advance!

Great vids, enjoying the jokes and just the sillyness in general. Which definitely doesn't harm the content itself because that remains good and helpful. Keep it up!

How detrimental is it just to leave it all to your staff to sort out? Has there ever been a side by side save comparison between actively managing all aspects of training or just leaving it to your assistant (on the assumption your assistant / other coaches are of a high standard)?

this season with Athletic Bilbao i began to rely very much on *recovery training*, since i had many injuries at the beginning because of playing with an intense pressing style. I shall therefore give the advice of putting even 2 or 3 instead of 1 recovery training between matches. This combined with some good fitness coaches will make players get less injuries and don't miss important matches, also they'll have less risk of injury (something i always look while selecting my XI team for a match). Plus, the rest panel from training section is something i manually fix after every training day in order to have always low injury risks

You could make videos where the entire content is acting out how FM situations would look in real life :D

Quick question : for the U18 and U23 Coaches, I think the only reason to have them is when you want an improved youth setup and they specifically tell you how many of those coaches you have to employ in order to maintain it. Am I understanding this correctly or are there other (important) reasons to have these young coaches?

Great content btw, lots of useful info, for amateurs and experiences FM players alike.

One small correction is that mentoring doesn't effect hidden non-personality attributes such as consistency. Working out how training actually works is my current project, but I'm still in the theorizing stage. Here are a few of my guesses: The big 4 attributes are natural fitness, stamina, work rate and professionalism. These directly or indirectly substantially promote happiness, performance and progress. 'Balance' for example only promotes performance. Professionalism can't be trained, but the other three are all done by 'endurance'. The only drawback to it is fatigue is 'greatly increased', but if you have a big squad with regular rotation, it's actually a bonus because match fitness is kept high and rotation helps avoid complacency. I think the 'general' training is probably a waste. Players have limited PA and training slots, so why spend it on keeping irrelevant attributes even just steady instead of prioritizing the good and letting the bad fall? After the big 4 comes teamwork, off the ball and acceleration. This is my conclusion after assessing how all positions are effected. 'Teamwork' training doesn't just increase the attribute, it is important for learning the tactics and team cohesion, so it is crucial. For 'off the ball', 'chance creation' and 'attacking wings' train it. General 'tactical' is probably also worth doing once every so often, as it trains both teamwork and off the ball and some other pretty important attributes like anticipation. 'Quickness' for acceleration and 'Resistance' for the work rate, but the latter is primarily to serve the defense. 'Aerial defense' also important for defense players. For those hectic weeks, replace physicals with GK training (primarily 'shot stopping') and 'set piece delivery' (trains all set piece attributes generally). If you have a rotating squad, only 1 'recovery' after each match is needed, zero rest. I don't have any data yet except my own save, in which things have been going without issue except that my GK seems to be suffering from just 1 'shot stopping' slot per week. Getting an additional general 'goalkeeping' slot is probably a good idea, just to keep attributes steady. I reckon it's best the goalkeeper is the one who suffers/stagnates, as its only 1-2 players to replace and progressing a youth is less likely in the GK position because of the greater years to full maturity.

Mentoring only effects professionalism, determination, and ambition, other stats change over time naturally even without tutoring. I’m not saying it can’t be effected, but as of right I now, there’s no prof that I know of. Also position does not matter that much aside from learning player traits. What’s more important is players influence and players fame .
