An interview with Josh Garrels about the process of making his new album "Chrysaline" - It began with an exercise in simplification - leaving the extraordinary, and entering a place seemingly ordinary. In this place, like a secret passageway to Narnia, I found the invitation to explore worlds within worlds.

I discovered Josh Garrels about a year ago, and I was a little worried that he might have disappeared because all his music seemed to be a couple years old... but I am so glad to see he is taking his time to create true beauty, true art... I love how he gets his inspiration from the world around him.

It’s crazy how what Josh can do on one album, almost every artist would take an entire lifetime to even come close to achieving. He turns what most artists would think of as being mundane stories and topics into absolute beauty. Even his interviews sound like he’s reciting poetry. It’s just refreshing to listen to an artist like him who was truly called and created for curating songs how they were meant to be. Especially compared to Christian artists. Most of them (mainly the mainstream ones) have no original sound. It’s as if they don’t even care to put forth their time and talent to writing well-thought lyrics that truly honor and reveal the beauty and intricacies of God and His creation. There can be more to worship than simply saying we love Jesus repeatedly, and Josh understands that. He sees the world and life as God sees it. Not looking at whatever gaps we put between ourselves and Him, but how tethered we still are.

I came across your music on spotify looking for Christian music that was different and yours is truly anointed and I can't stop listening to it. And i found this video looking up others and i think it's so cool you grew up in South Bend and have found such deep faith and love for Jesus in spite of the culture influences. I'm also from Northern Indiana and lived in South Bend for a few years and I was so lost at that time in my life. I fell deep into the darkness there and for some reason God had his hand over me through all of it and pulled me out and showed me the hideous sin I had given into. He saved me and I've watched him save so many others around me and it's the most beautiful thing. You have seriously inspired me, not only with my own music, but in other ways as well and I am grateful for the people in this world that are really living for God and sharing their gifts with us all. I had a similar experience when I moved to the inner city. It took looking deeper to find beauty, but it was there. Every crack in the sidewalk and gunshot in the distance told a story of brokenness crying out for help. I prayed more for my city then than ever before. It's funny how God moves us so that we'll rely upon Him to show us beauty, wherever we are.

When he described " World's within World's" I thought of God's solar systems instantly and the growth of goodness and just how amazing God's life and growth is. Thank you Josh, you described it perfectly.

thank you Josh for your beautiful song and adventure with God showing you our "worlds within worlds." i too have been given the knowing and seeing in nature this concept. God revealed to me when collecting wild flowers there is a miniature world of landscape with ground cover plants & flowers, the same as in the world we exist in and also the heavenly realms of nature landscapes. But we have to notice these lessons from creation drawing us to God the Father and it is such a soul and spirit regeneration and connection with God. The Maker & Creator of all, intricately connected, testifying of His Magnificence, Love & Beauty. Praise Our Creator for giving US eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts to experience, minds to connect and Spirits to fellowship within...Peace Out Josh! May your Garrels tribe increase!

Wow! This is so in time! Because we are living in a world that You can't avoid the fake images that come to You, and we sink almost without realizing that we are sinking. If I ever had a bucket list it wouldn’t be about places but about meeting people. I’d love to meet Josh and see how music is created once a song is written but not sure if I will or not since it’s a wish not a goal. I too came from MI but visit my daughter in Seattle and love the northwest. My father played in jazz bands when I was a child growing up in the Midwest and I loved it when the band would practice at our house. It was a blessing to grow up in a home with music. There’s something about music that speaks to the very soul of a person. God uses your music to speak to souls. Keep up the great work. Carry on with courage. Your music and wherever you record is excellent. My spouse and I are sound geeks and your music is so well recorded that it takes me back to those safe places I had as a child.

Josh, thank you for this video. My husband and I have been getting the same message about "simplification" for about 4 years now. We are in the Northwesr, but we moved from the Gresham area and then moved further East to Goldendale, Washington, a town of about 7, 000 people. God has been moving so much in our lives through this move and our obedience. Keep seeking His Kindom and His rightoeusness brother!

He spoke the same to me in 2019 when I moved back to my hometown in a poor simple area. It's been healing to introvert up with the Lord and go out and see that beautiful world of northern MN.
