This was the scene where I actually learned what "character development " is. I was young when this episode first came out. The Northwest party episode is one my favorites just for Pacifica's development alone.

I still love how after this Mabel totally forgives Pacifica as she has no grievances with her in Northwest manor. But Dipper, who is still annoyed in this car ride, has not. I can only assume it’s because she hurt his sister.

It was the moment in the show where I realized that Pacifica isn't a sucky person at all, she just has no fucking idea how normal things work because her parents are terrible. All her friends are probably paid to be there for the sake of holding up their reputation.

And then in the Northwest Manor episode it got confirmed so hard that I got a full body shudder when the scene with the bell came up. Pacifica is pretty much a trophy for her parents to show off and when they're out of the public eye, she's barely above a pet. She's been spoiled with material wealth (she has multiple ponies until the manor gets sold) but she doesn't really get to do anything that her parents didn't plan out for her.

Like. That shit is so fucking sad that I still can't really wrap my head around just how bad her home life must suck. Girl needs therapy, and needs it bad.

First of all, that taco HAS to be nasty and covered with mold at this point. In real life, it'd probably be quite soggy from grease, too. Not only that, but Pacifica takes it with the hand that was JUST pressed fully into sticky, pre-chewed, car germ-filled gum. While Mabel is sweet, and this is good character growth, that isn't the only thing going through growth (like the mold on those tacos).

There's a short fan animation by Mike Inel called "What If Gravity Falls Was An Anime." It takes this scene and recreates it with extremely high quality animation that emulates the best slice-of-life school anime art styles. It also focuses on Pacifica having several revelations about Mabel, herself, and the kindness she is being shown from a young girl who has every reason to despise her. It's one of the best pieces of fan art for this series.

Hot take: I like Mabel. Can she be annoying? Yes. Can she be selfish? HELL YES!!!! But at the same time, she's very charming and quirky, and has some really funny moments.

At first, I hated Pacifica, I thought she was a stuck up, pretentious brat. But after this scene, and the episode in season 2 where she asks Dipper for help with the lumberjack ghost, she's become one of my favourite characters, and her development came naturally too. Gravity Falls is such a good show, especially with it's characters
