The Real Reason Hayao Miyazaki HATES AI (Not What You Think)

Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has dedicated his life to creating beautiful animated movies by hand, so it’s no wonder he isn’t exactly keen on the rise of artificial intelligence in the film world. However, his reasons for hating AI might surprise you. In this video, I take a deep dive into Miyazaki’s opinions on AI and the origins of his most brutal quote: "I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself." As always, thank you so much for watching — I read every comment, so please jump in and join the conversation! Cheers!

Ok, that's just the 2nd video I watched, and I think I _have_ to subscribe to your channel.

As someone who lives with disabled people (Not Hansen's Disease), I am very touched by the story and 100% agree with the stance on the fact that creativity will die.

He is right to hate ai, I feel the same as well for most things ai related. It is good to use in some repetitive processes but when looking at the creative process you really don't want to use it much if at all depending on the execution and the thing you are making.

Very informative, nice to return to this moment with some more context.

I feel it's important to reinforce a distinction between CG and AI. CG is just a tool for creating images like a pencil is, it works in a very different way but it's ultimately just a different way of drawing images, and it still requires human animators to produce each frame one at a time just as hand-drawn animation does (it is possible, of course, to automate CG animation in the way video games do, but this does not apply to animation as a film/TV production, and is again created frame by frame in most cases). The goal of animating without human input using AI is very different in character, and it seems obvious that it would upset the head of an animation studio who employs some of the best animators in the world and whose whole career is based on the humanity with which he creates his work. I can't imagine what other outcome the Dwango people thought would happen after showing their video game monster to Studio Ghibli.

As much as i think miyazaki is someone of another generation, he does have arguments for his opinions and i can understand where he's coming from. I makes me sad to think that there probably won't be someone at the head of Ghibli after he dies.

My response to this wonderful video is joy and sympathy with such a creative man who has deep feelings of compassion and on the other side, of intense dislike of treating others who are seen as 'different' with inhumanity and cruelty. I am finding out more about Miyazaki's creativity and am loving what I am discovering. Thank you for posting.

It would be easier to list the things he doesn't hate.

Edit:

Okay...

After watching the video, i can now definitely see what's the cause here and how miyazaki is maybe not just someone who doesn't seem to like anything.

I was completely unaware of this story and it reminds me of this caricature, that shows how a moment taken out of context, can easily be framed or misunderstood as something it just isn't.

Fantastic research work, as always! I went in thinking I knew already pretty much all of what you were about to say, so it was a really nice surprise. Keep up the great work! <3

Miyazaki had the whole room absolutely flabbergasted lol.. they were probably hoping he'd say something different, something more supportive of the soulless technology. I personally agree with his Statement.

I believe many people who are active in the Generative Ai industry or people who cling onto it for some reason, I believe they don't think very much about anything other than than the AI itself. many companies leveraging AI don't care about this Technologies possibility to push people out of work, because they are focused on mass productivity and maximizing a profit for minimal effort... all the while it could sever the cycle that is the world economy and how money changes hands. seriously, think about it. how can you buy the things these guys are selling to you if you've been put out of the job?!?!?

others, especially investors look at it as a get rich quick scheme, never mind the product, especially if it is on the rare off chance that it is actually beneficial to society, it could be a toaster as well, put AI on the label its sure to sell more units!

I can't exactly blame the people pitching this AI think To miyazaki to really ever know about his disabled friend, but at the same time it seemed they were so enamored by this tech that they didn't put much thought into anything else but what they had been trying to do with the AI and for why, kind of like how a mad scientist didn't ask themselves on whether they should or could. they didn't think of why this needs to exist other than for a shallow offensive reason. not even considering, again another high priority reason for developing this AI was for the sake of Ramping up productivity in vain of people and the human element.

As a bonus even my father who is an artist himself has gotten obsessed with AI. I see him constantly generating images on his phone, god know how many AI image his phone is gagging on at this point. He swears to me that AI is creative, as he shows me his nonsensical images of what he claims to be a Tripod from War of the Worlds. Sometimes I ask my father if he'll ever Come back to making Music, that it has been a long time that I've heard him work on music and that if he'll ever finish the 2nd album that he started. you know what his response is? he doesn't have the time, and then resumes generating slop on his phone... I personally believe AI has stifled my Father's creativity.

honestly so obnoxious, bro can’t suspend his disbelief for the concept of a ‘zombie’ just to appease the people around him and not come off like he thinks he’s shakespeare
