Why I Bought the Original Sony A7r in 2019

I'm always looking for good deals on cameras. Though Sony seems to have been offering great value for the money over the last few years, I just couldn't stomach the price tags, as an amateur photographer.

However, a few years have passed since their original releases, and now the Sony A7, A7r and A7s are looking much more affordable.

So, I figured I'd see what all the fuss was about and pick one up. I have to say, out the gate I really like how many old lenses I can adapt to it. The resolution is valuable for cropping and overall it's an interesting camera. It fits nicely in my collection, as I don't have any other full frame bodies. I appreciate your take on this. We get caught up in wanting the newest stuff, but there are a lot of great options from just a few years back. And pairing with vintage lenses is a great use for it.

Great video man. I use a Contax 80-200 zoom along with Takumars on my A6000, and I will definitely get an A7R.

Late to the party. Today I picked up an A7R with a Manfrotto tripod and a monopod. Paid only USD 140 for all. Camera barely used and looks brand new. Need to get some lenses or a lens adapter for my Canons. Can’t wait to try out the Sony. First full frame mirrorless.

I immediately upgraded the A7R to 7R2 when it was launched cos of the IBIS, better grip, AF and a much quieter shutter.... still holding on to 7R2 as the later versions just didn’t have that significant real world improvements IMO

When I travel, I like visiting small camera stores. They have tons of inexpensive vintage lenses. Some are even AF Minoltas. I have old vintage Minoltas and they work fine with an adapter.

Cool. I just bought mine on ebay yesterday, about $800US too. Seems you are new to Sony. Welcome! I started a few years ago after watching Jason Lanier on youtube, and not really sure about Sony in the photo world. I went really cheap and got the NEX-3N! I managed to make it take great photos at ISO 200 (base ISO) and when required was using flash with S2 slave, really nice pics can be had even with that one if you stick to 200ISO (it is an interesting experiment to take ALL your photos at base ISO). I have a few other Sony camera's now. Really like em. Had to get the A7R for some reason, full frame sounds like a good reason! :-)

i got that same itch you had. i snagged the original a7 fell in love with it (my first full frame digital camera) i moved up to the a7ii just for the steadyshot and i came across an a7rii for 1100 and now im obsessed rofl

Literally just bought mine for $750, lol.. I'm a network Engineer, and I too did not want to spend mortgage money for a camera. I also have m4/3 GH4, and wanted a full frame camera. I've never owned full-frame.

I been waiting to get a Sony A7s or A7sii or A7r for a good deal. Only to adapt vintage lenses onto it. I have an A7r3, but I never want to adapt lenses to it. Only due to the fear of getting dust all over the sensor that attracts dust like crazy.
