A Tribute to Jean-Paul Belmondo

One of the most unforgettable performers in all of French cinema, Jean-Paul Belmondo (1933–2021) lent his natural insouciance and tough-guy visage to art-film touchstones and genre movies alike.

As a massive fan of crime cinema, I loved this guy. He oozed coolness & style. Him, Delon, Gabin were the gods of French crime cinema, each one of them were part of so many of my favourite films. I only last week rewatched Le Professionnel too, brilliant film. Even when he ventured away from crime & action films like in Léon Morin Priest & A Monkey In Winter he was great. Sad to hear he's left us. RIP.

He didn’t have the greatest range as an actor, but he did have a huge personality and inner intellectual life that he would bring to every role he played. He was my childhood icon. Bless!

I saw someone comment that Belmondo had limited range. I disagree. I believe his range is vastly underrated, at least by most Americans (I’m in the US), mainly because so many of his films are not streaming anywhere and are not available to purchase outside of Europe for home viewing. I’ve seen most of them now, but I had to buy many of them on eBay from various European countries, usually with subtitles only in German, Castilian Spanish, Hungarian, Greek, etc., and not English. A lot of them are bootleg copies in poor condition. It’s taken me a long time to find so many of them, and I’m still looking for the rest! I wish I could upload them all to YouTube for everyone who wants to see them!

Jean-Paul Belmondo was an extraordinarily talented and skilled actor who did indeed have impressive range. The only things he didn’t really do (that I’ve seen, anyway) are singing and dancing. He excelled at everything else I can think of. He consistently gave outstanding performances, even in the films I didn’t enjoy as much overall. And what an interesting filmography! There is no one else like him.

What a king, just saw breathless for the first time a few months back and I loved his performance and attitude. As a performer and a man he's the exact kind a young guy like myself strives to be. He was it. He lived it and made it look real good while he did it too.
