Budapest says goodbye to the iconic Ikarus bus

Almost everybody from the Hungarian capital Budapest knows the loud noise of the iconic Ikarus buses.

But after over 50 years in services, the old, rattling blue vehicles were retired from public duties.

We used to have the ikarus buses in Toronto and Ottawa

Ikarus buses were my childhood in Murmansk, my birthplace. The last articulated Ikarus 280 was withdrawn in March 2014, with the short 260:s serving a few months longer.

I spent my childhood summers in Budapest and have many fond memories of riding these around Budapest and the surrounding countryside. Both the rigid 260’s and the articulated 280’s! I’ll miss this iconic busses! They just don’t build them like they used to!

One of the sturdiest buses. Those buses survived roads in Poland. I know because I was riding ikarus in my motherland Poland back in 80s and 90s.

I am not from Hungary myself, but as a Georgian, another post-soviet country, I have heard stories about the Ikarus buses from my father (who's obsessed with Soviet transport, _and so am I)_ and always wanted to see one myself... Too bad they are practically extinct from Georgia. And to think that they are going extinct within a nation where they were born in to begin with... It's extremely sad to me. o7 Ikarus, may you drive on forever in automobile heaven.

These were a staple along with the Mercedes 0405 in Athens Greece. Houston Texas and I believe a couple of other US cities had the articulated 280 sold under the Crown badge for the US and Orion for the Canadian market.

What happened to them after? Were all of them scrapped or did some managed to be sold to museums/private buyers?

fun fact the ikarus company got renewed thay still make busses but they have a different name now
