I’m autistic and was diagnosed at 16 !! It took me til 22 years old to accept and be thankful for that diagnosis and when I did that it was then I could learn that my autism although has it’s struggles ALSO very much so has it’s advantages!! I pray she gets the help she needs to help her struggles with autism but also to help her nourish her autistic traits❤️❤️

I’m autistic. The biggest advice I’d like to give all parents is listen to your kids. If they say they don’t like the therapy listen to them. A lot of therapy is not designed for autistic people. It’s designed to force autistic people into acting neurotypical which is incredibly painful and can cause really severe depression and anxiety

Be careful which therapies you choose because a lot of them are really bad and can really hurt her

Does she really want the world to know about her business?

I'm sure this was a really difficult decision, but I truly commend the family for making the decision to prioritize this diagnosis. It certainly isn't a damaging condition, but it can be hard to adjust to some of the inevitable changes. (I'm an autistic adult and that is still true for myself.)
I hope your time in Florida is relaxing and wonderful ❤️

i desperately hope she isn’t going into ABA therapy. it’s disgusting and traumatizing.

two things:
1. good! therapy is very difficult when you can’t build a relationship with your therapist, especially when on the spectrum (i have adhd, but it overlaps with autism in a good amount of areas).
2. as someone else commented, did your kid consent to this info being shared? you didn’t have to specify if you still wanted to give an answer, saying “hey our kid just needs a break from traveling for personal reasons” ykwim? idk. weird if they didn’t consent to it.

Took me 4 years of being misdiagnosed with ADHD until in my last year with a teacher and the principal they pushed to have me more correctly diagnosed which came out as high functioning Asperger's.
Thanks to them I was able to get off a medication causing a lot of damage to my body.

It took my mom time to adjust to understanding and she still struggles with understanding because as I grow older triggers change.

For your child watch out for triggers and avoid them. Those triggers don't go away but the response to those triggers will change for a child it may be crying but a teen or adult may be aggressive or violent.

A trigger of mine is people touching me even barely I used to be fairly hostile as I kid too it but it wasn't too bad but as an adult because so many people violated my space on purpose the response is explosive with a purposeful poke equalling the person being ready to catch these hands.
I've managed on my own time to reduce the reaction to specific places like outside of my shoulder where people commonly tap for my attention but touch near my neck is an automatic punch to the vitals. Only people brave/stupid enough to touch at spot is my mom and sister only because I have to force myself to aim away from vibe checking.

Stim toys also help and stimming takes a lot of forms.
Leg bouncing, hand movements, sounds not made with their mouth, very odd sounds made with their mouth, etc.

I still occasionally freak friends out when I do a very good impression of my guinea pig chirping or of a cat questioning sound. I do these because it reminds my family I'm still here and it reminds my friends I'm not asleep again.

As long as it isn't autism speaks or ABA therapy then I'm glad you're helping her get the resources she needs, my assessment for autism and ADHD is in 6 days! ∞

I hope the therapies are good, as an autistic person myself, I hope they let her be herself, I've heard of some 'therapies' that try to make autistic people more "normal" which is very damaging and harmful to the autistic individual. Getting my diagnosis at 17, it helped me understand that I am different from other people, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing
