While the video focused on anchors primarily being used to hold stationary ships in place, it's also true that anchors can be used to slow down a ship, particularly in emergency situations or in restricted waters. This practice, known as 'dragging anchor, ' is not the primary use of an anchor, but it's a critical technique in certain scenarios.

Sailor here. I’d say you’re mostly right, but we do use the anchor as a brake sometimes.

The ship doesn’t stop on a dime, but it is probably one of the fastest ways to slow down.

YES! Till now I wondered how the anchor was pulled back, if was "anchored" at the bottom. NOW I SEE!

Can confirm it is mostly the 2 ton weight 3 feet into the sea bed that prevents the ship from drifting

I asked my wife to throw the anchor over. She did! She never tied the anchor to anything but, she threw it over.😂😂😂😂❤

That video clip of the boat coming to an abrupt stop is funny. The anchor was in front of the boat yet it caused the boat to come to a stop moving forward

It’s the chain that laying flat against the bottom directs the anchor to dig into the bottom.

Anchors and their chain are endlessly fascinating!!

You can stop a moving ship by dropping an anchor but there's a probability that it will rip open your hull if it stuck somewhere

That anchor in the opening clip looks strikingly similar to my own.

Nah, I believe that the main function of the chain is keep the pull on the anchor in a horizontal direction, along the seabed to ensure the anchor digs in. This is also what enables you to pull it up again: By reeling in the chain, the pull will now be vertical and get the anchor dislodged.

It fascinates me how large vessels like Air Craft Carriers or cargo ships store tons of anchor chains and stay afloat. Large ships have literally tons of anchor, and it’s equally impressive to me how ships stay upright when anchors go over the front of the ship; in my head it seems like the boats ought to tip to that side with all that weight pulling on it

It actually also depends on the different type of anchors used. Different anchors are used for different types of ships.
