Love the white truck who turned around and ran over the grass. Must be a Florida thing.

Great video Wally. I previously hired to young guys that had no experience. Me being a caring person. The goal was to keep them out of trouble and put some money in their pockets. Well.... long story short it didn't worked out. Some people wants to learn some are there just to get some money.

Great video Wally, thanks for sharing. We have also found that a lot of times the green guys turn out better because you can train them way you want. We’re always on the lookout for people that enjoy this industry as well. We’ve found that that makes a world of difference when it comes down to there work and how well they do it.

hiring green, you can teach them the way YOU want it done. Wally you da man, building around the crew leader is so smart. If your crew leader is genuine they'll make the rest of team more willing to go above and beyond. I was the edge/ weedeater guy when I got into the industry, now I own a company. Thanks for all your effort with putting the content on the tube. Guys pay attention, this channel shares knowledge!

Glad to see the regular cap. Grown man wearing a flatbill looks goofy to me. To each his own I suppose. Great info in the video!!

Doesn't matter what industry your in it's hard to re train people that have spent time and trained in other companies that operate differently and set in those ways.
I think your idea of new untrained guys is great your laying down a solid foundation.
Ha ha wish I could pay $13.50 down in Aus for a casual unfortunately rates start around roughly $22 hr and go up so solo it is down here.
Any way money aside I think it's great your laying down the solid foundations for your company moving forward.
Great vid mate and hope u guys have a great season.

Failing businesses fall short in execution. A complicated plan that can't be executed is sure fire failure. A simple plan that is executed well is the ticket. Execute your plan well and you will have success. Make a commitment to a philosophy and execute well and you can make realistic and meaningful change throughout (as the environment changes) your plan with success. Make sure your people can help you execute your plan. Starting pay is not the issue, have leaders that can model good behavior (not all experience is good experience) and mold good behavior out of newbies. Pay is not the number one reason someone stays at a job, it ranks about 4th. Pay at least market rate . Treat people with respect and show you care, step back from the operation and administer the business and you will grow. Check on day to day, don't always mow. Successful profit margin and more time with the family is the goal. This is advise from a person with 76 graduate credit hours in business, MBA, MBAPA. Have a wonderful day!

I think you have laid out the pros and cons to using a green guy. Definitely some advantages as you said.

Great info Wally I totally agree with hiring green guys if they're motivated to learn and grow with the company they're worth 13.50👍

Super weird, I've been subbed to your channel for quite a while and it looks like I was removed from your sub list. I watch your vids as often as I can (if your season is anything like mine in the spring a couple of times a week is as good as it gets with the crazy spring starts to our lawn care season). YouTube pulls some shady craps when it comes to this as this is not the first time I've noticed I've been removed as a sub on channels. Really like your content, keep those vids coming! - Phil in Billings

Good luck I can’t find anybody that wants to work regardless of what you paid them. Only wants to work enough to get a check and then takeoff. I need to get paid the same day it’s sad

I got to say my friend you’re one lucky chuck if you can hire somebody for less than $16 an hour.Up here in Calgary Canada nobody will get out of bed for less than that even without the coronavirus thing that just makes it tougher

Sad part is the help is going to stop and then all those people will be begging for a job again. There are some who truthfully want to work but there industry has been hit the hardest and well theres just not enough openings. Luckly i think our industry didnt get hit that hard. Ive seen more people spend money on those landscape jobs. I think id hire someone with no experiance if they truley wanted to learn and truly wanted to bring value to the company.

Whatever you spend your time at you'll get good at.
Spend your time working you'll be great at the tasks.
Spend your time/$$ on sales/marketing you'll sell a lot of work.
If spend your time on searching/seeking out, interviewing, refining your hiring process. You'll find good guys.

You can't invest less time on looking for good employees than you would on selecting your next mower and expect to have good results.

If you find a good guy that's good at any work in the green industry most likely he has the skill set to be good at many trades.  Let's face it the green industry pays less than all the other trades. So if he doesn't really enjoy the work, or at least the work environment.  He won't be around for long.

People are not widgets they don't all fit in/respond the same way.  If you want to keep your hair and your sanity you need to be able to adapt.   Or you can be like everyone else and complain "there are no good guys out there". Obviously you have to have some parameters/guidelines but this isn't your father's work force. And I say this as a nearly 60 year old man thats been in this industry since the 70's.

I will also add, I find for every 3 employees you need full time, you must have 4. Because there will always be something up with someone.  It's not right, I agree, yada yada You can complain about it or you can adapt. So if I need 12 people to complete my routes. I know I need 16 on payroll.

I Find myself saying "guy" a lot I mean person. I have a couple of women that work for me now. Yes in the field, in the Arizona heat, and have had many over the years. If you find a good guy, even if you don't need him now, hire him. You'll find work for him to do or you can replace your weakest link.

If you're always looking you'll find yourself in the zone and it becomes much easier, it also becomes part of your day. If you do it sporadically only as you think you need people you'll find it isn't very comfortable. The process is not as smooth. Lets face it typically we never looked a hire untill we're so far behind that we decide if I don't do this I'm going to lose either employees or accounts.

The new jobbing platforms are great because you can search resumes. Rather than placing an add. That puts you in control of the hiring process rather than putting out an ad being inundated with people calling you disrupting your day.

Hiring is where you business will grow or die.

I hire newbies all the time. Some work out some don’t. I start everyone with 1 year or less of experience at $12.50hr. I give a probationary of 30 days and the. I will raise them a little bit but depends on attendance, reliability and work ethic. After 30 they get PTO, Benefits, etc. I find most people even experienced people can’t handle large commercial properties (we do a few 15 plus acres communities and 5-20acre parks) they are so use residential in and out under 30 and then back in the AC or small commercial where you not on the feet for a few hours at a time.. I have guys at $17, 15, 14, etc
