I love how that's a perfect example for the evolution of language. Some group of people creates a word, or gives an existing one a new meaning, others hear it and start using it ironically. But then they get kinda used to it, and start to use it unironically, too, until it becomes a part of your regular vocabulary.
And if the overall connotation of the word isn't too negative, plus if it fulfils a niche that makes it worth using, the word sticks around for years or even longer.
