No private steel company works at a 2-3% profit margin. Most of chinese steel companies are state owned. Unlike most countries where production is driven by demand, chinese production is driven to state-subsidies and huge debt.

I don't think shear increase will help in market capture that too going against Chinese. But what India can do is what Chinese has done to Germans in Automotive industry. In 2001 German Auto manufacturers were up and firing in chinese markets with Internal Combustion engine Cars but Chinese auto manufacturers never touched that segment itself indeed they took very undiscovered path of electric vehicles during those years investing heavily in battery R&D and Electric vehicle designs which is giving enormous benifits to them almost entered even German markets as well. What India can do looking at the geography is to invest heavily in R&D in Green Steel, Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia production which can be game changer making India in terms of Green branding. India should focus on these type of sectors.

There is a big difference between Chinese labours and Indian labourers. Indians are good when it come to white collar jobs but manufacturing blue collar labours Indians can’t beat the Chinese, Vietnamese etc..
