The antics of Turkmenistan’s authoritarian leader, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, have recently been the butt of jokes by Western comedians. But the daily realities in the country are grim – and unlikely to change.

I've met a Turkmen guy, and heard from him that back in the day the Turkmen government made natural gas free. However, apparently almost everything else remained expensive in the isolated country, and the combination created very strange market distortions and failures. For example, people would leave their gas stoves on 24/7, because it was cheaper than using matches to relight the fire.

It's difficult for central Asian countries not be dictatorship because they have two gigantic dictatorship neighbours. At least they can make a little changes if they want but none of these countries are allowed to do something for better by their two brothers. Turkmens can start revolution but with high probability it will end with awful results

I am from Turkmenistan too and I can clearly say that not only the cituzens who live inside of the country suffer from fictatorship and atm, but the students who study abroad also suffer from poverty. As a student we can only get 100 dollars a month and it isnt enough to live wuth that money so we have to work in the evening to make a living and working causes so many problems to our study thats why turkmen students fail from the exams and hated by everyone but iys not our fault, its the fault of f*cking dictator and his insatiable family

Horrific stuff. General public awareness in the west of the whole region is appalling.

In my opinion, It is difficult to export Turkmen's gas via west route passing through several counties, of which the right of way of gas pipeline is unlikely to be secured or they may have to pay a high transit fee or toll !

Very informative video, but the music background is to distracting and repetitive

John Oliver did talk about some of this, actually. It’s just that he’s also extremely memeable.
