The Baroque Era
Episode 1: Courts and Churches
with host Sarah Joy (cellist, songwriter and music educator)

---

The term «Baroque music» refers to the period or dominant style of Western classical music composed from about 1600 to 1750. The Baroque style followed the Renaissance period, and was followed in turn by the Classical period.

Baroque music forms a major portion of the classical music canon, and is widely studied, performed, and listened to. The term «Baroque» comes from the Portuguese word barroco, meaning «misshapen pearl».

The works of George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach are considered the pinnacle of the Baroque period. Other key composers of the Baroque era include Claudio Monteverdi, Domenico Scarlatti, Alessandro Scarlatti, Tomaso Albinoni, Johann Pachelbel, Henry Purcell, Georg Philipp Telemann, Jean-Baptiste Lully, and others.

Having never been educated about music, classical or otherwise, I “discovered” baroque music about forty-five years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it since. I “discovered” Halidon Music much more recently, and this particular video this morning. THANK YOU for creating this content! I look forward to future episodes.

I've always had a love for music, particularly jazz and R&B, thanks to my dad being a musician and learning the clarinet in high school. It was only after college days that I added Classical music to my musical interests---particularly Mozart and Debussy, and harpsicord artists. It's only recently that I began to want to understand the evolution of German Romanticism era, the music it inspired and its effect on music and the arts in general. This podcast is a great help to that understanding.
