Here's the deal with SRV; if you saw him live (and I did in a fairly small room) after 10 minutes you feared for his life, after 30 you feared for yours. Just a total force of nature.

"I can do that... for 5 seconds" is the line of the video lol, perfect SRV summation. Awesome vid dude

In a million years I’d never have called the chorus effect, but as soon as you put that on, it was obvious it was there in his playing

"effortless" is an interesting choice of words. Like, yes, he made it look and sound effortless, but he was absolutely using up his body to make that tone.

You are just the best! What a wonderful study of one of the all time guitarist. I was privileged enough to see SRV live 7 times. I saw him drunk, sober, sweaty and even outdoors. There was no one better. Thank you for this

Very important that you showed that SRV used the "shoulder" of the pick. Equally important is that, although he moved freely and aggressively, he didn't hold the pick itself firmly. He picked every stroke hard but loosely. His love of thick strings were more for the wound strings than the plain strings. His set, per René Martinez, was GHS 1300 Rollerwound 11, 15, 19p, 28, 38, 58.

One thing to note, Stevie didn’t use an actual .13 gauge set, I’m sure he did early on. But it was a custom hybrid of the inner 4 strings of an .11 gauge set, and the big and little E’s from a .13 gauge set. So a little more manageable to use, especially tuned down. Then when he got sober, he went down gauges, to a full .11 gauge set.

The most impressive thing about Stevie was he never ran out of ideas, he always had somewhere to go. I've never seen anyone else capable of doing that so constantly and effortlessly.

All of the things that you pointed out were spot on, but with regard to his playing with ferocity... part of that, which I think was a HUGE part of his sound, was that most of the time he didn't just play one string, or even 2 with doublestops. He was smashing all 6 strings and muting the strings he didn't want the notes on, rather than playing just the strings that he did want notes on. I think this was the single biggest contributor to his huge sound. Most players rake the strings to try and get there, but I think he was muting unused strings not only with his right palm, but with his fingers on his fretting hand.

Just wanted to give you a hats off on keeping the example levels “matched” so we can fairly judge the tonal change after every addition

I usually hate this kind of crap because people just know SRV is one of the legends and they half ass some video to get views.

You are a real fan and it's really nice to see that. Subscribed to the dojo.

This is easily the best breakdowns of not only his gear but his style that I've seen. And doing it in 11 minutes is all the more impressive. Well done.

The high-action thing was something I feel like wasn’t as well known as the heavy gauge strings, but makes a huge difference! It creates this… “bounce” that can be so groovy. Discovered it by accident with my Strat I setup for slide. Never going back.

One note choice I hear him do often is he would bend a typical resolution like the b7 to 1 and then repeat it BUT on the second time he would leave it just a bit flat. Having just given your ear the resolution you expect he then subverts your expectation and it sucks you right into the speaker as you wait for the resolution that doesn't come. Extremely effective and I've never heard anyone else do it like that.

This is the best example of guitar YouTube content. What a stellar video!

I think Stevie had a singular focus.. His tone, speed, accuracy was honed razor sharp in some of the least tolerant venues with very critical audiences.. He learned in that way to develop the endurance and attitude that lets you survive in that kind of environment. Thank God we got him as long as we did.. as tragic as his loss was.

I have to say, man, that I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody sound more like Stevie Ray Vaughan than you did at your final solo. Incredibly impressive!

"He somehow managed to play the guitar with the ferocity of a wolverine, but with the dexterity of a hummingbird "... Such a beautiful and poetic way to say it, and so precise. This quote really got me!

The greatest thing about SRV is you know as soon as you hear it that it is him - a sound all his own. Top five of all time in my opinion. Great video!!!!

I love that you showed proof that the heavy ass strings have a fair amount to do with the tone, I can’t stand when people try to say string thickness doesn’t matter. It absolutely makes a difference in top end, clarity and attack/volume.
