Nokian Tyres & future technology - The world's first non-studded winter tyre with studs

The world's leading winter tyre specialist presents a revolutionary concept tyre that one day may become the reality of winter driving.

The unique stud technology brings extreme safety in icy weather. With a press of a button, the driver can bring out the studs to improve the grip of the tyre. When the studs are not needed, they can be retracted back into the tyre.

The concept tyre is presented in connection with the 80th anniversary of the winter tyre. Nokian Tyres developed and manufactured the world's first winter tyre to match the Northern frost in 1934.

Two years later came the improved solution for passenger car drivers struggling with the slippery winter roads called the Snow-Hakkapeliitta. Nowadays, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta is one of the world's best-known winter tyre brands.

Thats IT! I have had it. I'm going to apply for a job here and get this thing to market even if I have to work for free! I WANT THIS OUT IN 2024!

What happens as the tread wears down and the metal socket is more exposed and you end up driving on exposed metal?

How does the mechanism work? How is the button interacting with the studs?

Maybe one day they will be affordable. Until then just get yourself a set of regular Nokians and you'll kick winter's ass! I bought a set for my 2wd pickup this fall and have only got stuck once. With 200lbs of sand in the bed I have no problems getting around and winter driving is FUN never scary! For winter tires don't consider anything but the best (Nokian)!

When are you planning to release the tires and how much will they approximately cost?

Damn, that's awesome. I'm sure the costs for production car are pretty insane, but hopefully some day.

awesome idea, only things I see is it would look to me like the studs could be damaged easily, low amounts of tire wear would expose the retracted studs and how would police/ laws handle this? As in my state you can only run studs on roads with ice, snow ect, guess it would kinda be open to discussion and depend on the cop.

Awesome! I see two potential problems:

(1) Most US consumers don't use winter tires. Perhaps this could be fitted to an all-weather tire such as the Nokian WR G4 instead? It would be easier to encourage widespread use of all-weather tires than seasonal tire swaps.

(2) People might not remember to press the button to extend the studs - especially if the roads are mostly clear with occasional patches of black ice. Perhaps the studs could be linked to the ABS/ESC? Whenever the stability control or ABS activates, and the temperature is below freezing, there is likely to be ice, and the studs could automatically extend. Perhaps governments would also be more likely to permit the use of studs in such a situation, when the studs are not continually extended, but are only extended during loss of control. Governments that ordinarily ban studs might permit them for such automated emergency use.

Wait... a nonstudded tire with studs. Maybe you should think about the name. Worlds first electronically controlled studs or Worlds first retractable studs. Calling it a nonstudded tire with studs is akin to the term Military Intelligence. An oxymoron.

уж лучше тогда ездить летом на зимних шинах,   у которой повылетали все шипы, но высота протектора выше, чем у новой летней, чем тратить деньги на эту ерунду

So how does an electronic or vacuum button tell these to go in and out? If its wireless, how do the studs get power? Battery powered may run out? I cant see this catching on... il stick with my landrover!
