This is a particular subset of evangelicals you are speaking of. It is called dispensational theology. Up until this view took off in the United States (imported from Scotland), most Christians throughout history believed that Jewish ethnicity and religion had no special place in history/prophecy after the Jewish Temple was torn down by the Romans in AD 70.

And yes, it completely distorts US foreign policy. but there are plenty of evangelicals and Protestants quite happy to criticize Israel. Let’s stay out of other people’s ancestral feuds.

Auron Macintyre had a great video 1-2 months ago about the Christian and Israel link. Basically dispelling this notion that Christians need to support the Secular Ethnostate of Israel for Jesus to return. I believe it was around the same time people were claiming “Christ is king” is antisemitism.

It's interesting when you look at influential "extra-national" groups have on American foreign policy. The 19th century saw a lot of pro British individuals until spent in the world wars, and the 20th saw the rise of a pro-Israel demographic until war fatigue in its region looks to have finally broken that infatuation. I predict the 21st century America will be overly concerned with South Asia, primarily due to Indian immigration and their prominence in political and economic arenas.
