The Holy Monastery is located in Penteli, specifically on the south side of the Penteli mountain. It is a historical men's monastery and today belongs to the Archdiocese of Athens.
The monastery was built in 1578 by Saint Timotheus Bishop of Evripou, who came from Attica and had left his seat because of his persecution by the Turks. St. Timotheus fled to Mount Pentelikos, where he found persecuted literate dwellers, Ascetic clerics in a place where there was water so that they could cultivate small gardens. He convinced them to build monastery and they began to look for a location at the foot of the mountain. So somewhere there, they noticed the bones of a dead ascetic and with them a small icon of the Virgin Mary. So they decided to build the monastery on this very spot.
It has 2 chapels within that of Agios Paulos and Agios Timotheus, as well as 18 Metochia throughout Attica. The katholikon of the monastery is a cruciform church, inscribed with a dome and with later additions it took the form of a triconch, following the church building standards of Mount Athos.
The church was renovated like the monastery in 1768 and 1858, while radical interventions were made in 1953. The frescoes of the church are probably made by the hagiographer Dimitrios Kakavas, while the pantocrator in the trollos and a later work around 1750 by Fotis Kontoglou, hagiographer of the Icon of of the holy step, as well as those of the iconostasis. The images of the exonarthex were made by Ralli Kopsidi. Cleaning and maintenance of the church's hagiographies took place in 1971 and then in 2015.
The Holy Monastery of Penteli has a museum and an assessment. Here it is also known for the 'hidden school''. Specifically, in the excavated underground arcades of the old monastery, a permanent exhibition dedicated to education during the Turkish rule was organized, in which the scene of the ''hidden school'' is represented and the figures of the teachers of the genus and their contribution to the preservation of the letters are shown.
It celebrates the fifteenth of August and the following day, sixteen of August, the memory of the Founder of Saint Timothy, as well as the Monday of the Holy Spirit.
