A lot of people get the meaning of Danish word hygge WRONG.. in this video I will tell you what hygge is & what it ACTUALLY means! Is hygge the key to hapiness? When do we use the word HYGGE in Danish language? Can you hygge during summer? When do Danes say hygge? Is hygge an lifestyle, Danish philosophy or mentality? Was hygge actually invented in Denmark or is that only a MISCONCEPTION?! Plus my thoughts on 'The little book of Hygge' and Mike Wiking's definition of hygge being an art of creating nice atmosphere.

"""What ever you do that you're feeling good about - is HYGGE.""" This is the shortest and most accurate explanation you'll ever come across. - Sincerely a random Dane

i find this so interesting because I can parallel it a little to when english speakers use 'wholesome' to describe certain enjoyable moments/foods/interactions - my german speaking friends told me there's not a succinct translation for wholesome, and obviously that goes both directions when terms they have don't translate well to english

I would have liked to have heard more from your hygge expert 😀 "The Little Book of Hygge" definitely started a publishing trend! I was in a bookstore before the pandemic and realized they had a display of 10+ books on hygge, lakom (Swedish), ikigai (Japanese), and similar topics. My favorite title was "Päntsdrunk" on the Finnish "art" of relaxing by drinking alone, at home, in your underwear; although this may not have been entirely serious…

Fantastic video. I have just come back from a very grey Copenhagen. It was incredibly misty on Saturday and I have never seen so much city mist. I don't know how often it is that bad, but Copenhagen was still wonderful and it was great to see all of the clips of places that I recognised in your video. What I do know is that Denmark seems so organised and smooth compared to how things are in the UK. And the Danish people are so wonderfully helpful and polite.

Your video was perfect! It's easy to get caught up in all the how to's, when in reality, it's easy to hygge. I love your hygge expert too. Many thanks too.

This video was very helpful! I discovered hygge as a 'concept', 'philosophy', 'lifestyle' several years ago.

After watching your video, I realize there is no striving involved. I think us Americans like to live fast and strive for things. So of course we would strive for hygge! Lots of people have made money off of the concept and still are. Which I agree is brilliant! 😂

It is funny, after watching I realize I and most people I know hygge without realizing. Like you said, we just use different words to describe it.

Great video! Thanks for sharing!

After reading few books on Hygge and watching videos about it, I will not lose myself in providing or finding correct definition. Instead, what you explained it here, I found out that I was doing it from a very long time.
Enjoying simple things, like having tea alone at night, eating a quiet lunch, walking while listening music, writing something, talking with my family, curling in blanket and reading book
these all things makes my mind relax, and I feel peaceful. When I find stress in life these few things make me peaceful. But recently since I married, my hygge is seen as something nasty. I am accused of wasting time and being lazy or careless, I am constantly attacked on my hygge and this breaks my heart and I feel mad that this simple concept is not understood.
People who read this completely thank you for bearing this. Anyone can go on and burn themselves in earning money or simply talking thinking non stop about less material things in life. But this hygge can do one thing- balance your brain in this crazy world.

I really enjoted this video - I like how your angles and how you edit. About Hygge I forgot this existed until I saw this video. I like the 'we're chillin' translation. I also like thinking of Hygge as something luxurious. Will def start trying do more Hygge'n! Thank you. I enjoy your content🤍

As a Swede I was pretty confuse when I first heard about "hygge", I didn't get it, because we do it here but just call it "to coze", or "to chill/relax". But we do use the word: "hyggligt", but we don't say it like "huga". Thank you for your video, makes so much more sence, it's like having a "hygglig" or "trevlig" (nice) time. My husband who is from Skåne told me that it's something else in the atmosphere in Denmark though, we swedes are more stressed Still.

Hygge could also be described as living in the present moment / living in the now. And appreciating a moment fully.

In certain countries, stress is a lifestyle. Anxiety is the norm. When everybody around you is stressed and anxious, you don't even notice the constant noise. Or the constant criticism.

For me, hygge is turning off the noise and appreciating a moment. Sometimes this means noticing the way light falls on a corner of your home. Or appreciating a bite of food. Or holding your pet and feeling the softness of fur.

Whatever sensations that you normally can't get in touch with when your head is cluttered with fear and stress.

I'm sure that as you've said - the social security in Denmark is a big part of why Danes are able to feel those present moments more fully.

I've felt this the most in the Caribbean though. Languid, enjoyable moments.

In the U.S., whole cities are stuck in 24/7 anxiety mode. Anxiety is our philosophy - our lifestyle - our norm. It can feel suffocating.

-from American whose father is Danish and stepmother is Polish. They live in Denmark, I grew up in the U.S.
