Close the DOE and use their $90 Billion annual budget to provide education revenue sharing with states on a per capita basis. Win-win-win.

The future of the U.S. Department of Education is to be a footnote in the history books.

Can he? Yes of course. He’s got full power over congress. Obviously he can’t unilaterally do it as the guy who thinks we didn’t know that said.

I defy anyone to name one government agency that works better than the private sector. Department of Education included.

If people are going to “borrow” money to get a university degree they should pay back the taxpayers who lent them the money, just as they agreed.

You chose to take on a debt! YOU pay it off, not US! stop the crap and grow up! or petition all the schools, teachers, and staff to just work for free! good luck

To everyone here agreeing with this idea: clearly, education failed you already.

There are so many fallacies that this myth is built on, it's hard to know where to start. But I'll start with this: the reason you may feel that public education has been failing children is not because it exists; it's because it's been underfunded for decades.

Back in the 80s, Republicans often said, "We want to shrink government till it’s so small we can drown it in a tub." But they weren’t shrinking government indiscriminately – they were defunding systems that directly support the majority of Americans, especially vulnerable populations. Public education has been a target, and the effects are real.

Teachers are paid little and are expected to cover the costs of classroom supplies, with many spending hundreds from their own pockets each year. Imagine working at a job where, if the office needed paper or markers, you'd have to buy them yourself. That’s the reality for educators, while federal funding for education continues to be cut.

It’s not just about money; it’s about priorities. We have 1 in 7 Americans going hungry daily and 1 in 5 children who don’t know if they’ll have food tomorrow. Poverty affects the health and mental well-being of students and their ability to learn, setting them up for a lifetime of challenges. And instead of addressing these root issues, we’re seeing moves to repeal child labor laws, allowing children in economically struggling families to be pushed into low-paying, often unsafe work environments rather than focusing on education. It’s a choice to keep them stuck in a cycle of poverty.

And it’s short-sighted. Weakening or eliminating public education leaves millions without the resources they need to thrive. Over time, an uneducated population becomes less innovative, less capable of critical thinking, and less equipped to navigate the complexities of our modern world. History shows that when nations underfund education, society suffers. Education isn’t just a path out of poverty for individuals; it’s the backbone of a thriving, informed, and economically competitive society.

To support dismantling the Department of Education or defunding public schools isn’t just a personal opinion – it’s a statement that millions of children don’t deserve access to learning, opportunities, or a fair shot. So, to those celebrating the destruction of public education: understand that what you’re really supporting is a future where opportunity is a privilege only a few can afford.

The insane increase in the DOE for administration duties with no improvements is a problem for the federal gov.

"Student Loan Forgiveness" literally just passes the debt onto the rest of us. We should NOT be paying for someone else's educational choices.

I think the Lord that I was educated (not indoctrinated) prior to the Department of Education being formed in 1979/80.

Paying for their degrees… in what exactly? Gender studies, social arts. Paying their loans off so they can be unemployed.

Why not pass legislation that criterion for grants and monies cannot be set by the department rather than stealing the funds to help the poor to distribute amongst wealthy Republicans in tax breaks?
