One million copies in a month may seem decent. But when you add the context of this being a Star Wars game from one of the biggest names in gaming, one million stops feeling so impressive.
So, what happened? Why did Star Wars Outlaws fail?
It’s easy to think that expectations were just too high – that the game could never live up to the hype. But realistically, there never was all that much interest to begin with.
And I think that’s mostly because of Ubisoft.
I’ve been tough on some of Ubisoft’s games, but I’ve also enjoyed some of their recent stuff.
I usually try and give their games a shot, but a lot of gamers just won’t touch anything from Ubisoft anymore.
They’ve been burned too many times by buggy releases, aggressive microtransactions, and repetitive, formulaic gameplay.
In order for Star Wars Outlaws to have succeeded - it needed to be a seriously great game with none of those issues.
Unfortunately, it’s just an okay to decent game that’s burdened by all the classic Ubisoft problems.
I played to the credits – kind of enjoyed it – but it’s just not good enough to shake off the weight of Ubisoft’s reputation.
I don’t want any game company to fail. I don’t want any hard-working developers to lose their jobs. But if Ubisoft wants any chance of turning things around, they need to start making some serious changes to the way they make and monetize their games.
