Collecting sewing supplies and sewing are two different hobbies, right?😅 What was your fav and that you wouldn't have left behind either?

Absolute favorite sewing thrift haul was years ago. When I was a child(in the 70's)my grandmother made an entire baby doll wardrobe for my two favorite baby dolls. I have pieces still today. Still have those dolls too. I had asked her over the years if she had any remnants of the fabric in order for me to make replacements for lost pieces. She couldn't remember if she did, and we always left the matter for another day. When the time came for her to move in with my parents due to care issues, she told my sister and I to come go thru her fabric. She had a huge amount of fabric and vintage patterns. While going thru it all I not only found a chest full of yards and yards of the fabric used for my entire doll wardrobe, but all of the doll patterns she used to make that wardrobe. Even better still, within the patterns were notes she had written as she worked, and swatches of fabric pinned on pattern pieces as she mixed and matched patterns to create the outfits. She passed away 6 years ago at the age of 95. I use these patterns to this day in my Etsy shop, making doll clothes for a new generation of doll lovers old and new.

For about 20 years I've been thrifting for fabric and yarn supplies, working on the theory that one day I might want to make stuff but have no money. Thanks to COVID, that is exactly the position I'm in (no call for tour bus drivers when the boarders are shut) and I thank my foresight for so doing as I now have time and energy to make things and I have supplies to do it with.

When sewing for our health care professionals (NHS) here at the start of the covid crisis my neighbours all donated bed linen, buttons etc to me. Some where not suitable but I was told to keep them for my stash. Then a neighbour bought over her mother's sewing stash. The neighbour is in her 70's and said that her mother hadn't sewn much after the 1950's so it must be very old. Amongst it all were numerous metal zips and even a couple of invisible zips in packaging that had "patent pending" printed on the package. From what I could gather via research they were made in 1945.

One of the secret passions of my small life is sorting out people’s buttons. Finding the matching ones and threading them together. Alas, it’s only a job I usually do once for someone. It I’m lucky that I’m indulged.

I recently bought a whole load of fabric sample books for a very cheap price. Taking a while to take them out and remove glue, but so worth it. There's tweed, linen, velvet etc so exciting. I will be using it to make clothes for fantasy creatures I sculpt. Odd buttons I love, what self respecting troll wears a jacket with matching buttons ?
Another great video, your enthusiasm is infectious.

I love that you mention that thrifting is not just affordable but "sustainable". I like to think of thrifting and gleaning (and donating) as my way of honoring the labor and resources that went into creating the objects. Plus I'm broke 😂

One of my locals even bundles fabric in plastic with meterage written down and a swatch. Hunting for fabric and bits gets addictive.

I love all of it! That tracing wheel brought back memories of my mom letting me play with her tracing wheel & the paper used with it on scraps of material. My mom is 90 now and no longer is able to sew. She has been giving me some of her things, which of course I am thrilled to have. One thing she gave me is her button tin that is the one she’s used all of these years. It’s a round cookie tin, and it is FULL! My sister and I used to spend hours playing with those buttons! Now I have it, and my grandchildren love playing with it too. Funny how things come full circle!

I've thrifted so much fabric and notions in the past, but I've found a little shop recently which has reasonable prices but also sells all evening full length dresses for $5 each! It is a goldmine. There are some with metres and metres of silk and satin, and full beaded panels and jewel clasps. But the best was a modern wedding dress that I think was trying to be vintage. It was stuffed with netting petticoats and then over 20 metres of high quality winter white silk, all for $5. All of it would have cost about $800 to buy in a shop. Never felt so excited about a find.

I wanted to say that I really appreciate you moving towards more neutral/inclusive language like “sewing friends” rather than “ladies and gents”. I’m not sure it was intentional, but it made me happy! So thank you! 💗

I thrift basically everything for sewing! Embroidered linens are one of my favourite things to find secondhand! I don’t always have the patience for embroidery, so it feels extra special to sort of collaborate with some unknown maker when I use it for a project

So Incredible. Such great supplies and such wonderful supplies.

I see other videos and people I know, who find something they want to make and they buy the pattern and they buy the supplies and they start (doesn't mean they finish). I like to buy supplies at a second hand and think... "OHHH>>>I Know What I will make with that."

Great Video. Thank You.

I’d love to know how you store all your fabric and notions. This winter, I want to reorganize my sewing room (adding shelving, peg board, etc.) so I’d love a video on here, or on VSS, with any tips!

Hi Evelyn, my grandmother was a seamstress and I inherited all her supplies. What a treasure! Buttons made of mother of pearl, hand-made laces, beaded collars and belts. Her wedding dress made by hand in Vienna! I have no use for it but I keep it to remind me of her kind personality.

I love to buy sewing supplies at thrift stores, especially when I find something vintage. When I first learned to sew I had my mother’s fabric stash on hand and she had a few vintage fabrics I was privileged to use. I still have all my original sewing tools and patterns and keep adding adding from thrift purchases. I’m fortunate that there is a thrift nearby that only sells craft and sewing supplies. My go to place when I need something special.

Evelyn, I've mentioned before that I started seeing when I was 13yrs. old & am now 73. I still have my "vintage " tracing wheel, seam ripper and measuring gauge. I'm enjoying sewing more of vintage clothes now since I discovered your channel. Thanks for all of your tips.
