Dude. I've had this game for years. You can absolutely play the story co op with sonic and tails, and after you clear enough blue spheres you can unlock & knuckles mode in options and it literally always adds knuckles as player 2 in mania mode. (You can even knuckles & knuckles, its a joke)

I originally got Sonic Mania through the free promotion on epic games, but for whatever reason the Epic Games launcher was totally wrecking the performance of the game to the point where the max FPS I got was 40, so I rebought the game on steam when it was on 75% sale and it runs so smoothly the difference is night and day. The lag I got on the Epic version almost made me want to not play the game.

Even though I own a Sega Megadrive, I was never a fan of Sonic games. But multiplayer maybe be fun. I just need to find someone that like to play to unlock all levels 🤔

you can play 2 player in story mode if you hook up 2 controllers
