i actually think i like Salinger outside of Catcher in the Rye because i think the Glass family is a lot more interesting (ie. Franny and Zooey and Raise High the Roofbeam Carpenters). some of the Glass family members also appear in 9 Stories!

this is a genuinely really fun list as i have enjoyed quite a few of these lit gems. a book i feel like you would love and should read as i’m surprised you’ve never mentioned is “perfume: the story of a murderer” by patrick suskind. it’s one of my all time favorites, disturbing in a cool way and the writing style is very donna tartt adjacent. but i shall definitely make an effort to check out the books on this list i haven’t read !

Left Hand of Darkness is brilliant—a novel about friendship and more. Alice in Wonderland is not just for children; it is a clever story that adults can enjoy on a completely different level. You ought to try Kafka. I would recommend his short novel, Amerika; it is hilarious and classic Kafka. You ought to try the essays of Joan Didion; she is one of the best prose stylists I've read. And finally, War and Peace is by Leon Tolstoy!
