Glaucus, a Barred Owl and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, is showing off her impressive neck rotation.

Owl species, such as the Barred Owl, can rotate their heads 270 degrees in each direction!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Alaska Raptor Center, located in Sitka Alaska, provides medical treatment to 100 - 200 injured bald eagles and other birds each year. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 80,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-a-raptor program and classroom presentations around the country.

And now here's something to think about owl has a nerve that twists around their spine so that it won't get pinched when they turn their heads 270° either way. Now here's the cool part if you were to look at an owl who is already turning its head at the 270° point and it turns its head back around to face forward and then turns it 270° the other way ... Wait for it... Yes That owl has just turned its head 540°. Now in the wild will we ever see this No this complete hypothetical but if they can turn their heads 270° in either direction then yes they can turn their heads 540°. It should also be understood that that extra 90° isn't used as much. If there may be going for their Euro Pidgeot gland and they happen to see something and turn their head that extra 90 they might do that but usually a majority of the time they will certainly go 180° but not the whole 270. They are fascinating creatures

That looks so scary! 😳😮 Well, I generally find owls scary, but the head turn doesn't necessarily make it any better..🙈😅
