1000 ohms because at test conditions Vce=5v supply, If(forward current)=5mA; to produce this test conditions Rl= 5v/.005A=1, 000ohms current limiter resistor to produce a 5mA from 5 volt dc supply.
values of the test conditions are based from Q817A optocoupler datasheet.

I find myself needing to test a moc3020 but at pins 1 and 2 I get 1760 (the dot doesn't show it to me and I don't understand So 1, 760 volts means that “if” we supply the optoisolator with a voltage of 9 vdc ----> (9 - 1, 760 ) / 1 ma= 7.24 7 ohms and then get a volt value from the phototransistor . Now I am waiting for the HT125B to arrive to do it right.
