🔥Finally! Kulans and fallow deers settled again in the Tarutino steppe after a few hundred of years! 🔥

Last night the animals arrived from the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve to a new home - a protected steppe in the north of the Danube Delta region. 20 kulans and 8 fallow deers have settled in a temporary fenced enclosure, where they will adapt to new conditions. In the fall of this year or spring of 2021, the animals will be released into the wild to restore the populations of wild herbivores that once inhabited Tarutino and other steppes of Ukraine and Europe. This will help increase the biodiversity of the region, reduce the risk of fires and promote eco-tourism. The animal release is part of a larger reintroduction process and rewilding efforts in the Danube Delta region, supported by The Endangered Landscapes Programme.

When I heard in a news article on the rewailding website about the reintroduction of the kulan in the Taruntian steppe that the saiga antelope also lived in that region, it didn't seem like a bad idea to use its reintroduction

Other species that would be good to reintroduce would be the European lynx and the wolf to carry out their roles as predators.
