What Happened to Ben Simmons?

Ben Simmons, once considered one of the top young players in the NBA, has seen a decline in his performance. His points per game have decreased every season since his second year, and his defense, a hallmark of his game, has also seen a decline. His defensive rating, defensive raptor, steals per game, and blocks per game are all the lowest they've been in the past three seasons. Furthermore, he has struggled in crucial fourth-quarter moments, causing the Nets to rotate him with Seth Curry and Tj Warren.

To understand the decline of Ben Simmons, it's important to look back at the 2016 NBA Draft. The Philadelphia 76ers had the number one pick and many were wondering how they would use it. In order to fully understand the current situation with Simmons, it's crucial to examine the decisions and events that led to this point.

Just imagine if he wasn’t on a team with KD & Kyrie. His lack of shooting would stick out way more

What if I told you Ben Simmons did NOT have that DAWG in ‘em?

He's a role player mentally, with superstar talent and paycheck. He doesn't want to be great. The only difference between him and Giannis is that DAWG mentality.

He made his bed when he decided he didn't want to live up to his potential in Philly. So he ran and is now a journey man

Simmons biggest problem has always been work ethic… Being 6’10 and gifted doesn’t mean you don’t have to put in the work… $$$ changed everything for this guy, you can see it on both ends of the court now!!! Great example of a guy that’s gifted (basketball IQ wise) is Josh Giddey, kids been working his a@@ of and his numbers have gone up significantly this season… Hard work pays off 🤷🏽‍♂️

The interesting thing about Ben Simmons is the fact that even when he scored 42 points, the shots you highlighted were all layups and dunks. Today, when I watch him, he takes 14 foot half hook shots. That seems to be significant because it shows that even when he's a shooting distance away from the basket, he doesn't want to put the ball in a jump shot position, he would rather just hook the shot in.

As a sixer fan, we been saying this for a couple years now, he got that big chunk of money and you can clearly tell he stopped giving any effort, he got his pay day now he wants to go to a bottom seed team with no pressure so he can coast through his career and collect millions. People bashed me for saying it, but I watched it happen slowly.

This kid could have been a one of the greats his athletic ability and speed at that size is almost unmatched he just doesn’t have it in him mentally.

Ben is the definition of "If I was 6'10", I would be in the league."

It seems like he's too afraid to even fix his issues. In the modern nba you seriously need to not be afraid to shoot 3s. Especially when you have 7ft players doing it. No excuses.

Free throw shooting is by far his biggest problem. If he was as adequate as Giannis or Zion there we would see an entirely new player. His lack of aggression and even which moves he makes is to not get fouled. If he were confident in shooting 60% on high volume he’s superstar.

Simmons is a role player, nothing more. He’s scared to shoot, can’t make free throws, and his defense is declining. What a disappointment. 🤦‍♂️ I’m sure he doesn’t care because you know, he’s rich and you’re not. 🫤

He’s always been, at his best - a tall Rajon Rondo. Standing around as a non threat is the best way to describe it. Zero offense outside of layups and tip ins - but generally a shot is throwing the ball in the direction of the hoop. Against teams that don’t play D, he can drive and get to the basket - in the playoffs when it drops back to 1/2 court - all he can do is screen and stand around. All of this is amazing knowing his father was a pro - and he can’t shoot - at all. No post moves, no jumper - no nothing

Since his rookie year, fans and media keep asking why you don't shoot from 3s, you have to shoot from 3s. Even after triple double performance, the same question. And that got in his brain.

His defense declined because he no longer has a 7ft to rim protecting shot-blocker named Joel embiid standing behind him
