aseprite has a free open source code, so technically it's free if you compile it yourself and it's not pirating software

since it's open source you can also compile it yourself, does take a while but lets you try it for free with all features. It's quite finicky though, it only works with the specified compiler (from MSVC) and if you so much as have the MinGW compiler installed anywhere or listed on path it will give you a major headache because whoever made CMake didn't think it was a bad idea to auto-select compilers in an arbitrary order

I've been using GraphicsGale for many years and its been one of my favorites for pixel art. Sadly, it feels dated but there are a few tools that I would love to have it in Aseprite.

I recently did the change and honestly, Aseprite is very great with its visuals and accessibility and I get to do works faster, so theres that.

And creating tilemaps in Aseprite? Good lord I love it!

I’ve been using it to make sprites for a game for a class. I’m not an artist by any means, I usually handle the programming, but Aseprite’s tools and UI make learning it extremely easy and it’s been really fun learning how to do pixel art. I’m getting much better and faster very quickly. Definitely gonna continue using it, well worth the small investment.

Im trying free alternatives like Gimp first but granted if I ever got seriously into game design id probably get aseprite. I love how everything even the UI is pixelart

You can also add different pixel aspect ratios to make your art in too.
So instead of having purely square pixels, you can make them rectangles with an aspect ratio of 7:6, mimicking how they would have looked on an old CRT television when playing SNES games.

I use pixel studio on my iPad its free and i think its awesome for people who don't wanna spend money and for starters (it has all the things this pixel app to)

Many people are saying that it goes on sale often but I bought it at $20. I must say, aseprite was one of my best purchases in terms of games/software I’ve ever made. I’ve been using it for the past two years and I highly recommend it if you are able to purchase it

You can find a couple videos explaining how to compile Aseprite for free, supported by the creators, just make sure to also read the comments for lil tips

Piskel is free, has a website and an app that do the same thing, more tools, color palette support, and my friend, dads, sisters, brothers, nephews, cousins, and my other friends dads (who makes 128 x 128 bit pixel art professionally) support. Dont waste your money

I bought the payed version, but then it broke and I can’t open it so now I just use the free version and copy it to ms paint in order to export
