The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a network of radio telescopes around the world that work together to create a virtual observatory the size of Earth. The EHT's main goal is to capture images of black holes, which are regions of space where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape.

How it works
The EHT uses very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to observe at a frequency of 230 GHz (a wavelength of 1.3 mm). VLBI allows the observatories to work together as if they were a single Earth-sized telescope.
Where the telescopes are located
The EHT's telescopes are located in Greenland, Chile, France, Spain, the United States (Arizona and Hawaii), Mexico, and the South Pole.
The EHT captured the first image of a black hole ever taken by humans, which shows light emitted by matter swirling around a black hole at the center of the galaxy M87. The black hole is 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun.
