Natural Lighting for Houseplants Tips & Tricks! | Indoor Plant Lighting!

In this video I talk about about natural indoor plant lighting! I discuss how much light indoor plants get from each direction window as well as how to tell what type of sunlight a plant needs. We also go over some signs that your houseplants may be getting too much or not enough sun exposure & what to do in that situation. Natural lighting indoors is so important for plant health, of course there are grow lights that can be introduced into a houseplant jungle if the current lighting isn’t enough, but I definitely prefer sunlight for my plant collection if possible!

Hey Harli, the orientation changes for people who will in the southern hemisphere! If you live in Australia or New Zealand etc, then North Facing windows are the brightest and south facing windows are darkest :)

YES so glad you point out that "tolerating" low light is not the same as thriving in low light!

Don't forget to keep your windows clean! If they're dirty, less light can come in making for less happy plants!

You also have to keep in mind obstruction outside. I have north facing windows in my bedrooms, but they're actually brighter rooms because there's no obstruction outside the windows, whereas my south facing living room is much darker because of the balcony overhang, pine trees and other buildings obstructing the light.

If you can’t comfortably read a book in a certain room, it’s not a happy place for plants. Or something like that 😄

I am a new plant mom. Got my first plant 3 weeks ago. I am so lucky I found you. I was just thinking about light and had so many questions! I think you did a great job describing different lights with your words. 😊

This literally couldn't come at a better time !! We are moving within a couple months, and I've been paying attention to light and windows.
We will have a sun room this time ! Totally enclosed but windows on two walls. Boyfriend gave it the okay to be a plant room. 😍

Hi Harli, I watch your videos all the time and they're the best! This video is especially useful to me because I have a lot of plants and have been overlooking the importance of lighting needs for different types of plants. Some of my plants aren't growing well. They're alive, but they're not looking the best and not growing well. After watching this video, I've realized that I need to go through each of my plants and figure out if they're getting the right amount of light. I'm actually going to re-watch this video just so I can take down notes to help me out. Thanks again for this great video; it's a great help!

I’ve watched quite a few videos on lighting for indoor plants and this was actually way more helpful than most. I’m jealous of all your windows. I don’t have any south facing windows. ☹️

I’ve seriously been searching for a video like this for so long!! Thanks girl 🥰

Hi Harli 😃 the harder the shadow line is the more intense the light is. The softer the shadow means it’s getting the least amount of light. Love the video!!! This is very informative and helpful. 🙏😊

You're videos ALWAYS make sense Harli, the more you talk the more information we gain, I am just getting into learning more about house plants, I have always had some, but never really knew much about them, thank you for teaching me more about them...

This video is amazing! It's exactly what I needed and I have not been able to find it anywhere else. Thank you so much, especially for telling us where you place your plants.

Wow this has been one of your most informative and helpful uploads. Light levels are so subjective and so many factors to consider! For us citydwellers, tall buildings surrounding your place, balconies overhanging above a window, tall trees, etc. These things can drastically lower light levels.

I like how you said what plants do well in which facing direction.

Thank you, this was so helpful! I live in So. Calif and since I've started growing plants I've become more observant about where the sun is. At this time of year, the sun sets in the northern sky, so my west facing windows get minimal direct sun late in the afternoon/early evening. My north windows, however get a lot of light, including a little direct sun and eastern exposure is the strongest. And although we have a lot of south facing windows, they get absolutely no direct sun at this time of year! Would love to hear from others who live in the southern parts of the country.

Some good observations about lighting there Harli. It illustrated to me once again just how bright our light is here in New Zealand, we have possibly the most intense sunlight in the world due to our low air pollution and our proximity to the hole in the ozone layer. We are also closer to the sun in summer and winter than the northern hemisphere is, due to the elliptical orbit of the Earth - or so I've read. I have had to move plants away from south windows (equivalent to your north) and shift cacti to west windows from north (your south).

Great video Harli, I think finding the right spot for each of our plants and then finding the right lighting is half the battle. Interesting on where we live changes the light we have. I loved this video, thank Harli, have a great day, bye for now.
