When I watched the first episode, the breaking the fourth wall was so jarring that it felt off-putting... so I couldn't get through the episode. But the feeling kind of stuck with me... and Nicola is so amazing I wanted to give it a second chance. Once I watched the whole episode (2 weeks later), I got what it was all about... and I love the idea of her tying in a novel or mythology or whatever. I've now watched the whole series and am about to watch through once more... and then twiddle my thumbs waiting for the second series to show up. Thank you, Masterpiece!

Why did it take nearly 60 years after Alfie before this became mainstream? My favourite use of this is when she tells us how her daughter is talking to her father. Mic drop.

I love this show but I have to say it was difficult to get used to at first. Only Nicola could pull this off so well. Her way of inhabiting a character is so genuine and intense that you are drawn in and happily take on the role of the listener. I will watch anything that woman is in - I once saw a monologue she delivered and was spell bound. JUst her sitting in a chair talking. It was magic. But this show also has a range of excellent characters and great actors well directed and produced to create a wonderful series. Pleae do a 3rd season

It worked Season 1 because it did function as described in this video. However, Season 2 it's a gimmick and she's turned into a peculiar rambling eccentric obsessed with literary trivia. She is no longer confiding in us about the crimes and approach to solving them.
