I went to Chinatown in Yokohama to search for gao. Since it's Chinese New Year, I thought surely I'd find some but only saw "industrial" at two grocery stores.
Most of the Chinese in Japan are from Taiwan or Mainland China, not many Cantonese, so gao is not made by any of the Chinese bakeries. I was so glad to have this video pop up and will make up a batch. The industrial gao was...well, industrial. I'm tossing it out! Red beans are never added in Hawaii, but the gao is wrapped in banana leaves and topped with the red date, sometimes a sprinkling of sesame seeds.

Can you give the measurements for the ingredients? Did he use regular red beans or the ones sold at the Chinese market? They are probably the same red beans. Can you use the block/bar brown sugar?

It amazes me that I love the savory meals & dishes but I rarely like the desserts. I just hate the texture of them & the flavor of sweet beans

Why do you put lunar new year but your video call it Chinese New Year? It isn’t interchangeable…. Some other countries claim they are the same but it isn’t. Chinese New Year is unique to Chinese. Unlike Korean who were influenced by Chinese but celebrate a different event.
