Many years ago I talked to Porter Jesse Buck who said that steam trains in the 1930s went 110 MPH on this stretch according to a gauge in the club car. Speed is more a function of track condition than equipment

In Germany, even the normal regional commuter trains run at this speed. The Intercity Express Trains operate with almost 200 mph. From our point of view, the US trains are really outdated.

Detroit to Chicago. This part of SW Michigan high speed rail the trains travel 110 mph. This looks like Dowagiac, Mi. The Wolverine & Blue Water do stop there. Although some don’t they go through this small city at 110 mph.

During a visit to the USA I was on a NY to DC Amtrak a couple of years ago and the GPS speedo on my phone was telling me it occasionally hit 180km/h (111mph). The carriage was shaking so much I could barely type on my phone. Looking forward to to travelling on a Japanese bullet train one day and doing twice that. Hopefully without so much shaking.

For those outside of the US:

High speed rail struggles to gain a foothold in the US because it has a very niche use. The US rail system focuses on freight, moving more than 6 times the amount of freight by train than the entirety of the EU using trains that are heavier and longer than what is possible in many other countries. This is more efficient logistically, financially, and environemetally than trucks or planes in a country as large as the US but also leaves little room for high speed passenger trains. In most cases it's easier to take a car (and the freedom of travel that comes with it) for short distance or a plane for long distance rather than lay down a new rail system exclusively for high speed trains that won't even get enough passengers to turn a profit
