As a side note to this: Dragon Ball Kakarot does a phenomenal job with the Trunks special as well. The History of Trunks will forever be my favorite special.

I honestly think that the special was better than the manga. It made more sense for super saiyan future Gohan to be on par with the androids individually in the anime after so many years, then for future Gohan to be heavily implied to be no match for android 17 because he was using less than half strength in the manga despite the many years to get stronger. I also prefer Trunks becoming a super saiyan due to Gohan's death in the anime over Trunks already being super saiyan before Gohan even dies. The special was just better than the manga overall.

Even the slice of life scenes in the TV Special had emotion to them. Like when Gohan, Trunks and Bulma were sat having dinner together. They were trying to think of the past and happier times despite the doom and gloom around them.

Gohan’s last stand in the anime was the most depressing fight in Dragon Ball Z. They gave Gohan a fighting chance. The power up causing the rain gave you this scene of hope, dread and fear as you watch 17 and 18 no longer play around and go all out. When they get into formation, it was the end for Gohan.

The anime does have the more solid story. It gave Gohan more a chance taking on the Androids and I like how they didn't make Trunks a Super Saiyan until he saw seeing Gohan dead. It made it a lot more impactful.

The Special is better it made the fight between future Gohan and the future 17 & 18 matter and mean something rather then looking like Gohan didn't Stand a chance and just threw his life away and left Future Trunks

I definitely prefer trunks becoming a super saiyan after gohan’s death it adds more meaning to it and it makes it similar to goku when he first went super saiyan. Think about how strong goku was on namek but it took the loss of krillin to send him over the edge that’s what made super sayian so iconic back in the day. It took a tragic loss to gain that kind of power.

Wow History of Trunks came out after Cell became Perfect. So all the people that were watching this many many years ago when it first aired never knew the true hardships Trunks had to face. When Vegeta let Cell absorb 18 and Trunks said “No, Ive seen it all my life” we knew what he faced because weve seen it but those people who watched it for the first time could only imagine what Trunks had been through

Future Gohan’s death. Easily the saddest moment in Dragon Ball history, and the original version of this scene in the special drives to tears every time. Be sub or dub.

What I enjoy about the anime is that we see Gohan with both arms, able to handle 1 android on his own but then when it becomes 2v1 that we see how hopeless it is

The anime was better in the sense that the future was far more fleshed out. Anybody who’s read the manga will tell you that we actually see very little of Trunk’s future all things considered! I think being able to see an hour’s worth of this future that we hear so much about helps raise the stakes and adds to the gravity of the situation. Actually seeing people suffering and dying because of the Androids makes you more sympathetic to the people of the future and it makes you want to see the heroes succeed

The biggest difference I feel is how strong/weak Gohan is compared to the Androids. The manga flat-out states that Future Gohan isn’t even half as strong as a single Android whereas the anime suggests that Future Gohan reached a point where he could beat an Android 1v1 but couldn’t beat them 1v2

There are pros and cons to both regarding the Future Gohan situation. For the manga, you can argue that Gohan being THAT much weaker than the Androids helps convey how hopeless and bleak the situation really is. For the anime, you can argue that Gohan being stronger than an Android makes it all the more tragic that he’s still unable to save his future due to the unfair tactics the Androids use

Personally? I prefer the anime interpretation of Future Gohan being stronger. I feel like it just makes more sense to me. I understand that he had nobody to train with, but 13 years is a LONG time. Not even being half as strong as an Android as a full-grown Super Saiyan just doesn’t sit right with me personally

And I agree with you on an hour special focused on Trunks coming back to his time, seeing his mother, re-acclimating with his world, hunting down and defeating Androids 17 and 18, and an Imperfect Cell. Now that would have worked.

I always liked the idea of gohan having a chance against the androids but the manga made it seem like he had no chance so I prefer the tv special

Definitely appreciate the adaptation of the magna on this one here. I’m just wishing we could have seen a longer special once Trunks returned to his time.
