New Mean Girls is Queer?

The new Mean Girls movie is out and it’s… pretty gay? #meangirls #reneerapp #lindsaylohan

A lot of fan reaction and support surrounds how openly the new Regina George (star of the film) Renee Rapp discusses her own bisexuality.

But that was NOT the experience of the previous Mean Girls star!

It's really heartbreaking and disgusting that they felt they had to split up because Samantha was made to feel unsafe. I hope she's doing better now. And props to Lindsay Lohan for coming out at a time when it wasn't as accepted. I will say... I don't like to speculate on people's sexual orientation, but for Lindsay to get harassed into dropping a relationship and then later be straight... god, I hope that's because she just understands herself better, not because she felt forced to be straight.

I don’t have trouble holding both truths that people are able to know their sexuality at a young age AND that sexuality can have some fluidity over one’s lifetime. But I think conservatives find that hypocritical or hard to grasp.

Both the actresses for Regina and Janis are queer this time around. Janis redeems herself in her ending song, and she gets to go to the Spring Fling with a girl! The credits song Not My Fault is also just Renee talking about herself being gay and getting all the girls.

Ooof i remember the backlash lindsey got, my family would be pretty mean about it and lumped it in with her drug use and i remember saying "no shes not a lesbian if she still likes men, shes bisexual 🌈" (i was like 12) and then it took me like 3 more years to realize i too was a bisexual lol

When Janis was shown with a girl about to go to prom I sobbed in the theater out of joy. It’s something so small to many people but this is a HUGE step for the lgbtq community. Idk it made me so happy to finally see her be her true self especially singing she’d rather be herself and getting with a girl right after. It felt like she closeted herself due to the endless bullying of Regina in this version before she finally snapped. She finally apologized to herself for hiding the true her, said screw it, and began to fly into the person she wanted to be. Something about seeing that happen and it not be “look she’s lgbtq let’s clap and make it this huge thing the entire time” was heartwarming to me. It touched me after being closeted as a bi-demisexual who was denied by my parents for dating the same sex at one point. Seeing her sing Id rather be me on the big screen and then be herself was magical. 😭

Millennials fought SO hard for Gen Z nad Alpha to do this bc we love you (just like the generations before us.) I'm only 2 yrs older than Lindsey and deeply remember this. I grew up where being bi was a punchline and I had to identify as straight bc I am religious and and bc I KNEW I wasn't lesbian. I feel so much for Lindsey. "Bi is just a stop on the way to Gay town" was *always* the abusive joke even by my gay friends I received and told just to come out already and laughed at so I just stayed as an advocate for my gay friends. I didn't even understand I who I was until I was 36 with 2 kids and in an abusive marriage for over decade.

Renee Rapp is now out as a lesbian which is great! I find hollywood and the press seems to have it out for lesbian actresses

I myself am bisexual but before I woke up I was having a horrifying dream where someone tried to hit on me and I said ‘I’m bisexual and I don’t day old guys’ and then after I said that police were chasing me and I hated it and now I’m upset

Thanks for sharing this! The film makes multiple jabs/ brushes away at Lindsays past experiences in media and she did so much work and growth came back and embraced media again only for uneducated people to dirty her again. She said she's disappointed (not angry, just let down), and she has every right to be. These upcoming celebs need to educate themselves about the experiences and then journey of the celebrities they are referring to/inspo predecessors.
