This is the tomb of Sir Richard Burton the explorer in South London, and there is a window, hidden round the back of the tomb that allows you to see inside!

The position of that lid suggests you might want to take your wooden stakes, silver bullets, garlic and crucifixes with you when next you go tomb watching. Sorry, I forgot; nowadays you'll also need safety glasses, safety boots, safety helmet and a hi-viz vest.

That coffin lid was slightly askew. What an interesting place. The tomb on the outside is beautifully done. It must be a small cemetery the way another grave is squashed in the back of the tomb. I had never heard of that Richard Burton.

There are similar tombs in Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin. Though they have no glass, they have solid mental mesh to allow the living to see in to the coffins within. Great video, as ever. 😀💀☠️

Now thats a mausoleum, weird and creepy….but beautiful too. Yes the coffin is ajar but its probably the warping of the wood with damp and a century of decay.

Third time lucky - my previous comments have “disappeared”

Great video. I didn’t know anything of Sir Richard. Fascinating chap. There’s some great images of the interior of the tomb on the Burtoniana website. I presume there’s a hidden entrance as the tomb was restored in 2010? As for the coffin, I presume as the wooden box deteriorates and rots, so the shape of the box changes and the lid has moved from its original seat?

There’s a couple of pyramid shaped tombs in London and the Egyptian Avenue at Highgate. The latter requires a paid ticket to visit!

That coffin is not slightly open, it's just not completely closed.

I'd heard of Sir Richard, of course, but never anything about this. I have to say, it's quite the thing. Wow. Assuming the mirror is against the opening of the tomb, how was it affixed? Is the window glass or plexi? I would think glass would have been broken by now. If plexiglass, then someone's been in the tomb since Lady Burton passed away.

I only discovered/ learned about Burton when I read The Fabulous Riverboat by Philip Jose Farmer (everyone that has died wakes up on another planet - Burton is one of the characters)

It is quite possible the coffin lid may have been forced open from the inside, by the gasses released during bodily decomposition. This could happen if the coffin had been sealed well before being placed in the Tomb.

This is a surprise! I had thought that Burton had converted to Islam during his travels, I'm amazed he is buried on ground consecrated by the Roman Catholic church! He's as much an enigma dead as alive. Thanks mate, that was most interesting.

I don’t think I’d have the courage to look inside!

Wood warps, and twists, over many years of heat and cold.

As far as I know he only assumed the persona of a Muslim to visit Mecca, which is forbidden to this day to non Muslims. Explorer of Africa (searching for the origin of the Nile), polyglot, translator of the thousand and one nights, the Kama Sutra, and others, prolific writer, fencing master, his wife adored (which is quite an accomplishment in itself) him, etc. Were are men like that this days?. Cheers

well this Burton is certainly better looking than the famous one. I have to feel for the people living behind the tent/window. Do they really want to look out their window? Yikes, I think not. Yes that coffin lid is askew.

If this man knew he had all those crosses and pictures of Jesus around him I think he would laugh, considering Dick never went for religion. Well Islam for a time and I really think he believed in the Islamic belief. Anyone that knew him could tell you this is all Isabel's doing.
