Join us for an engaging discussion featuring global bestselling author Yuval Noah Harari as he explores the complex relationship between information and truth, bureaucracy and mythology, as well as wisdom and power. In this thought-provoking video, Harari addresses the existential crisis faced by humanity today. With ecological collapse looming, rampant misinformation, and the rise of AI-driven information networks, he poses a crucial question: If we are so wise, why are we spiralling into self-destruction?

Drawing from his latest book, Nexus, Harari unravels the story of contemporary information networks and their profound consequences on society. He discusses how humans gain power through cooperation but often sustain these connections by spreading fictions and mass delusions.

As we navigate the 21st century, Harari warns about the potential for AI to create a new web of delusions that may hinder future generations from recognizing the truths of our reality.

However, he insists that history and technology are not predetermined. By making informed choices, we can still forge a better path forward. If we cannot change the future, then why not engage in a dialogue about it? Don’t miss this insightful exploration of the complexities of our current informational landscape and its implications for our future. Like and subscribe for more thought-provoking content!

Something my best friend said to me 20 years ago when we were 14 is "No one wants to be the bad guy in their own story" and I still think about that nearly every day.

"... Information is not knowledge...", "... The truth is expensive.." very interesting statements.

Kafkaesque - right in the sense of "lack of feeling of influence on the world"

To quote Zappa (again):

Information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty.
Beauty is not love.
Love is not music.
Music is THE BEST

Yuval Noah Harari, is trying to convey the idea that humanity's progress in information technology does not necessarily equate to better decision-making or a decrease in self-destructive behavior. Harari argues that despite our advancements in gathering and disseminating information, we often fall prey to misinformation, flawed narratives, and our preference for simplicity over complexity, leading to poor choices. He wants the reader to understand that the real challenge lies not in the availability of information but in our ability to discern truth from falsehood and to resist the allure of emotionally appealing but potentially harmful narratives.

Harari emphasizes that information networks, composed of shared stories, beliefs, and values, are the glue that holds societies together. He argues that these networks, more than individual brilliance or even physical resources, determine the course of history. For example, he points out that the United States, despite its deep political divisions, remains unified in its belief in the dollar. This shared story, even if not reflecting an objective reality, provides a common ground for cooperation. This concept helps the reader understand why controlling and shaping information is so crucial for those in power.

I liked the perspective. It's forever interesting to me to hear different ideas. I love thinking about how to relate to stories and the underlying purpose of any level of communication.... even lies. Thank you for posting this conversation clip, ..to both gentlemen and all the production crew. Very professional ❤❤❤

When Claude 3.5 was asked about Yuval’s Kafka-esque description of our future (without mentioning that it was about Ai) this is literally what it said: “This framing could be particularly relevant today given:
- The growing complexity of AI systems and algorithms that affect our lives in ways we can't fully comprehend.”

Greed. Greed and selfishness is destroying our planet. Power and money. I would also add religion to human suffering.

Does not get to the root of the problem. Education, media and most of all, intelligence agencies are at the heart of this. It is lucrative to mould perceptions and thus people are never taught how to scrutinize their surroundings beyond the surface level. You cannot just blame "people" and call it a day.

Harari argues that much of the information we encounter is not true. He explains that producing truthful accounts requires significant time, effort, and resources, while fabricating stories is cheap and easy. Moreover, he points out that truth is often complex and uncomfortable, while falsehoods can be tailored to be simple and appealing. This disparity, he argues, explains why misinformation spreads rapidly, especially in the age of social media. He cites historical examples, like Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, to illustrate how seemingly ordinary people can be swayed by powerful, albeit false, narratives.
