Cold-Stunned, Part 1: Rescue

Every year, when cold weather starts to hit the East Coast, hundreds of endangered, cold-stunned sea turtles wash ashore in Cape Cod Bay.

We work with conservation partners to rescue these stranded turtles—the first step in their journey back to health and their ocean home.

On a vacation visit to Orleans, Cape Cod, in early December 2021, came across a, seemingly lifeless, small sea turtle washed up on a dock near Young's Seafood in Rock Harbor. Signs nearby suggested you call if you find a turtle. We called. They answered! The rehab center asked if we would mind driving the 15 minutes it would take to deliver the turtle. We were met by two sweet caretakers and left our foundling with them. They identified it as a young Kemp's Ridley sea turtle.
