Two legends of the Muscle Shoals music scene, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldman wrote several of the greatest pop and soul music Classics of the 1960s and 1970s: "I'm Your Puppet," "Cry Like a Baby," and "A Woman Left Lonely" to name a few. Both as a team and on their own, their careers have made an indelible contribution to Southern writing.

Join the chair of the Troy University English department, Dr. Kirk Curnutt, for a lively conversation about the art of songwriting, the role of music in the history of the South, and how many adventures they have had writing for Legends like Aretha Franklin, Alex Chilton, Janis Joplin, and many others at the 2019 Hall-Waters Prize for Excellence in Southern Writing.
